Triduum I was guesting at a nearby New Order parish. Not my gig, so I won't list that (but the DM there has been kicked off here, so he can't either.) But mostly stuff worth doing, and people worth doing it with.

At St. Sebastian's Akron today, nothing too exciting (7 singers, organ):
Pro/recessional: Jesus Christ is risen today.
    Mass I, Credo IV
Gregorian Propers (psalm-toned Gradual and Alleluia verses)
Motet at offertory: Regina coeli, Jef Tinel
At communion: O sacrum convivium, Remondi ; simple-tone chant Regina coeli

New-to-us priest who (oddly) had never done the Vidi Aquam...all went fine though.
  • Holy Thursday (No Organ)
Entrance Antiphon: By Flowing Waters, with Meinrad psalm tone
Kyrie: The Greek option in the missal chants
    Gloria: Missa de Angelis

Offertory: Ubi Caritas (from the Graduale)
Holy: Latin option in the missal chants
Mystery of Faith: Save Us Savior - missal chant
    Spoken Amen
    Pater Noster - Sung
Lamb of God: Latin option in missal chants
Communion Antiphon: By Flowing Waters, with Meinrad psalm tone
Pange Lingua alternating English, Spanish, English, Spanish, then Latin, Latin. (And was a hot mess—I'll be pushing for all in Latin next year)

(No foot washing, no stripping of the altar)

    Good Friday (No Organ)
    Psalm: Columba Kelly
Gospel Acclamation: to the Wandering Tone
Adoration of the Cross: At the Cross Her Station Keeping (not my choice

Communion Antiphon: Simple Choral Gradual, Rice
Additional Communion Music: That Easter Day with Joy Was Bright (Puer Nobis)

    Holy Thursday (1962)
    St. Joseph, Greenwood

    Full Gregorian propers
ORDINARY: IV (with organ on Gloria)
    CREDO: IV
    OFFERTORY: Durufle, Ubi Caritas
No idea as to the Processional or Recessional. I had work that evening so I was unable to attend. (I visited seven churches in the morning, following another long-standing tradition.)

    Good Friday (1962)
    St. Joseph, Greenwood

Full Gregorian chants for the two tracts. Pollen, having ravaged most of our choir, cut down the cantors for the prophecies, although Father was kind enough to allow Yours Truly to chant the first. Father was still feeling ill, so no sung Passion that day.
    REPROACHES: Gregorian
Crucem Tuam & Crux Fidelis: Gregorian
In place of Psalm 122 for the Communion -
Dubois, Adoramus Te [which, as a conclusion to his wonderful oratorio, I don't mind at all, but honestly; can't we learn the Palestrina for Good Friday?]
Yon, Christus Factus Est [this, and his setting of the Easter Sequence, I feel are Yon's two unsung (literally, almost!) masterpieces.]

After the liturgy, a relic of the True Cross was presented for veneration of the faithful.

    Easter Vigil (pre-1955)
    St. Stanislaus, South Bend

No vigil at Greenwood, and the Author was invited by the choir director of St. Stan's to join her and her family/choir. (Same thing, really - for those who have sung in a Trad choir, no explanation is necessary. For those who haven't, no explanation is possible.) This would be my second old-old Easter Vigil, and it hasn't ceased to impress:

FULLY CHANTED LESSONS. ALL TWELVE OF THEM. (The parish was blessed to have a few visiting seminarians from the Fraternity, so they had the manpower to do this. All politics aside - this made me giddy as a schoolboy.)
TRACTS: Full Gregorian (Sicut Cervus alternated between men and women)
LITANY OF THE SAINTS: Fully doubled
    ORDINARY: I
    OFFERTORY MOTETS:
    Palestrina, Sicut Cervus
    Arcadelt, Ave Maria
    COMMUNION MOTET: Byrd, Ave Maria
    VESPERS: Gregorian (alternatim men/women)
RECESSIONAL: Organ selection (from Rossini's Liturgical Organist, didn't catch the name) by choir director's 12-year-old granddaughter. This, and accompanying theGloria, was her premiere performance. Talk about a musical debutante - she was belle of the ball for this!

    Easter Sunday
    St. Stanislaus, South Bend

    1st MASS:
    ORDINARY: I
    CREDO: I
    OFFERTORY MOTET: Ave Maria (Gregorian)
    COMMUNION MOTET: Gregorian antiphon w/verses
Mass entirely chanted by volunteer schola and seminarians.

2nd MASS (yes, you read that right!!!)

    PROCESSIONAL: O Filii et Filiae
    VIDI AQUAM: Rossini
ORDINARY: Bartschmid, Mass of the Holy Cross (with Gloria interpolated from Gounod's Messe Breve #7)
    CREDO: III
    OFFERTORY MOTET: Mozart, Jubilate Deo
    COMMUNION MOTETS:
    Palestrina, Sicut Cervus
    Mozart, Ave Verum
    RECESSIONAL:
Sr. Cecilia Marie OSB, Regina Caeli
And how could you NOT end with everyone's favorite Easter hymn?: "JESUS CHRIST IS RISEN TODAY"

Second mass followed by mimosas, dried fruits, cheeses, sliced meats, and the Author engaging in his Paschal ritual of smoking a handful of American Spirits before remembering why he quit in the first place and throwing them away in disgust.

Hot mess is right. Well-meaning people don't see that this isn't a good idea.

No foot washing, so no fight over whether trans-gendered women can have their feet washed. Blessing.

Hymns on Maundy Thursday from TH82: (Sung by choir from rear pews)
How sweet the name of Jesus sounds on the believer's ear
    I come with joy
    My song is love unknown
    Offertory: A New Commandment (Anon)
    Humbly, I adore There

    Good Friday -- no music

    Jesus Christ is risen today
    Come away to the skies

    Gloria (Archer)
    Sanctus (Archer)
    Alleluia, Christ Our Passover (Hurd)

Postlude: Improvisation on Easter Hymn and Hyfrydol

Due to lack of rehearsal time and reduced singers in men's sections, I decided to play it safe. Surrexit was new to choir and they loved it. All in all, a splendid morning

Our town was hit by torrential rain and tornadoes on the afternoon of Good Friday. Several buildings were destroyed and many were still without electricity on Easter Day. Thus, I think more than a few person's were very happy to be in church.

Easter greetings to all of you!

I did tell the last person who complained about something that petty, to "get your arse up there and do it yourself." I repeat as much as possible from the Easter Vigil on Easter Sunday morning. The choir is tired, I am tired, and we have limited time to learn new music with the demands of Holy Week.

I hope to post what we did later today. With all the music, plus home air conditioning problems and a plumbing leak, I have been busy this week. Plus WLP had printing issues and the new missalettes covering next week and the remainder of Easter season are already two or three weeks late. We should have had them nearly a month ago.

  • Hot mess is right. Well-meaning people don't see that this isn't a good idea.

No stripping of the Altar? How did that happen?

Our pastor is responsible for two parishes about an hour's drive apart. He did Mass in both places on Holy Thursday, so he eliminated what he could to make it on time to the second liturgy. Because of this, while the parish would usually have separate liturgies for the English- and Spanish-speaking communities, it was all together, so he requests that the music be as bilingual as possible, and specifically requested the alternation between Spanish and English during the Eucharistic procession. It was plainly printed in the worship aid as it was to be done, but there were a number of mitigating factors in its execution that made it less than ideal in practice (this was my first year to be responsible for music on Holy Thursday, so I didn't have any practical experience—I only knew that I was told "this is how we did it last year").

The altar was stripped at a later time after all had left—I mentioned it and the footwashing as not having taken place as those are both times where I would have usually had music (Taize's Stay with Me and Peter's Mandatum, respectively).

    Bruce,

Well, I know, but at the Cathedral there were many who would attend both, so I had always done separate ones and felt a bit bad for repeating.

What was even worse about it is that—as we had not used the organ for all of Lent—I had completely forgotten to prepare anything for the recessional/postlude (same thing for us) and printed this off at church right before Mass to use. It's interesting how quickly one can get used to the way things are—just took 6 weeks for me to forget about it altogether!
