Technical note about MS-Publisher

    Just a heads-up: if you or any colleagues use Microsoft Publisher to prepare materials for your parish bulletin or other documents, please be aware that it is going away permanently in October 2026:

    This has nothing to do with CMAA, of course, but I did want to warn people who use the program in case they did not get the e-mail notice from Microsoft.

    May I heartily suggest a free alternative: Affinity (formerly Affinity Publisher). It is an inDesign clone and works very well.

    Can Publisher export to a format that’s readable in Affinity and preserves all the text boxes and objects?

    Correct me if I'm wrong here, but the stand-alone version of Publisher will continue to function after the deadline in October, though without updates.

    @Palestrina, I have not been able to discover a compatible format that does what you are asking. I've done one of two things: start from scratch or, open Affinity and Publusher side by side and copy and paste content from Publisher to Affinity. Depending on the project this is all I've been able to figure out. The issue with exporting Publisher as a PDFthen importing into affinity is every sing text character is its own object. I.e. ever sing letter and punctuation mark is its own text box.

    @ServiamScores Thank you for the suggestion about Affinity! I have been mourning the upcoming loss of Publisher. I mean, it's owned by Canva (which also works, but frustrating that its all online), so it's nice that this is actually something to download.

    Canva is fine for graphics imho. It’s not so good for anything else.
