Polyphony with Mass XI

I would like to include some polyphonic Ordinary sections for Mass XI. I have selected some sections for the Kyrie taken from the Missa Dominicalis ascribed to Victoria. Does anyone know who the real author of that is?

I am looking for a polyphonic Hosanna in excelsis to tack on to the end of chanting Sanctus XI. We sing it in F# minor and I would like for the Hosanna to be energetic and in a triple meter. Anyone know of something short that could work?
  • Maybe the Hosanna from Dalitz's Tribus Vocibus Mass?
  • This is very quick and rough, but here is an idea of what it perhaps would look and sound like, in F# minor. It's three part, and when you put it in that key, the ranges are more or less SAT, I think. Since you mentioned the Victoria, I assume you're looking for SATB. But it might be possible to play around with adding a Bass part, ad libitum, if you otherwise like how it sounds. The Creative Commons license that Mr. Dalitz kindly used allows for such experimentation. I can say from personal experience that this is a very fun Hosanna to sing.

  • I'd be interested to see your arrangement of the Kyrie, if you'd be willing to share it.

The Hosanna from the "Missa Salve Regina" might be even better suitable. I have attached the respective page.

My favourite Hosanna is the first Hosanna from Victoria's "Missa Ave Maris Stella". It is bitextual, a device that I like very much. If this raises too many eyebrows, though, you can simply replace the cantus firmus text with a fourfold repetition of "Hosanna in excelsis".

I decided to go with Palestrina's Missa Iam Christus for the Hosanna in excelsis.

Here is my edition of the "Victoria" Kyrie from Missa Dominicalis.

How did you insert the chant?

Our strategy will be to keep our usual order: cantors-people-choir, people-choir-people, choir-people, then cantors-all at the asterisk. (Or if there are two, then we could do cantors-schola-all).

Luckily we only need to do the Kyrie and Gloria with alternatim.

I might just reset the Gloria for my own purposes and then copy in a new score file so as to see what it looks like with chant inserted.

We do choir chant, all chant, choir polyphony for the Kyrie (if we have polyphony).

Right, I mean how did you insert the chant so cleanly?

I saw the score; I don’t do that order because the congregation would get confused.

I am also interested in how you @Benton were able to do this. It looks fantastic!

I just took screenshots of all the music and pasted it in a Google Doc. Then, I downloaded it as a PDF and used it to upload to CPDL. I also print it out that way for my choir. They need very specific scores with clear instructions, as most of them are not used to doing chant and polyphony in the liturgy.

Mine need special instructions because they don’t listen and don’t write things down :(
