    All Saints:

    Gregorian propers:
Missa Aeterna Christi munera (minus the Credo); Agnus X plus a reworked Agnus I instead of the 5vv Agnus II.
Sicut Cervus (Palestrina) and Ave Verum Corpus (Byrd); we didn’t have enough time for the Victoria O Quam gloriosum this year.
    Salve Regina (simplex)
Praise to the Holiest in the Height (NEWMAN, of course)

After Vespers and Benediction on Sunday (XXI Sunday after Pentecost; all chant, with the 2nd tone ad lib. for the hymn, which is our usual custom) the gang got back together for Lead, Kindly Light (SANDON), including the final two verses in parts, which was incredibly well received. My pastor suggested that we distribute the hymns (and I’m fine with this, but I figured that an English hymn as a choral meditation would be OK as a listening piece) and sing one more regularly so as to get a second English hymn in per week. He was very very pleased.

Then some of the guys sang Vespers of the dead (recto tono), following the older practice to celebrate both canonical Vespers and that of the dead on the evening before All Souls.

I try to compare music lists with various parishes in my diocese, and I noticed that a lot of them chose to use “saints” hymns for All Souls’ Day, and I found that rather odd.

Hymns like “For All the Saints” talk about those who are in heaven. All Souls’ Day is about remembering the poor souls in purgatory, who are awaiting the joys of heaven.

I think the use of such hymns on Nov. 2 can send the wrong message. Maybe I’m overthinking it—or possibly underthinking it.

Catholic, you are not over or under thinking it. Most Catholics just don’t understand (or want to believe in) purgatory.

Have you seen this as a multiyear trend, or is it an artifact of all this falling on the weekend this year, leading to a de facto suppression of All Saints? My free music was pretty much all All Souls even though the Mass was 21st after Pentecost. And how often do most Novus parishes sing All Souls, given that it's not a holy day of obligation?

Here in England, the bishops move All Saints to the Sunday, so All Souls gets lost for the N.O.
Our EF had the External Solemnity of All Saints on the Sunday. All Souls EF is transferred to Monday as traditionally.

See the attached liturgy guide for the 9am Mass. For the Faure Sanctus, we edited the text (sped it along) so that it included the Benedictus. It was actually pretty effective!

For the 11am Mass, the ordinary was from Missa XVIII, pro defunctis.
Sang the gregorian offertory and communio, then Salvator Mundi (Tallis) and Pie Jesu (Faure) for communion.

Hymns: Processional: I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say (KINGSFOLD)
Offertory: My Shepherd Will Supply My Need (RESIGNATION)
    Recessional: In Paradisum (gregorian)

@AugustBerchelmann, that’s a great line up. It’s approaching my ideal (though I’ll say: we let the organist play during communion as we distribute, but I don’t wish to encourage it, and I think that the choir singing does so more than the organist, illicitly or otherwise, playing…).

I do find the blessing of incense before the Libera me odd (but I believe that it is correct, even though it wasn’t done at the Mass).
  • At Holy Spirit in Louisville, we had the Seminary Choir from St. Meinrad come down and sing for our 10am Mass, alongside the Parish Choir.

    Choral Prelude:
Thou Knowest, Lord, the Secrets of Our Hearts (Purcell)
Entrance Antiphon: Requiem aeternam (Graduale Romanum)
    Responsorial Psalm: Meinrad Tone
Acclamation before the Gospel: Alleluia...De profundis from the Graduale but with English verse
Offertory Antiphon: Domine Jesu Christe from the Graduale
Sanctus/Agnus Dei: Mass XVIII; Memorial Acclamation: ICEL
Communion Antiphon: Lux aeterna from the Graduale
Communion Hymns: Jesus, Son of Mary, Fount of Life Alone (ADORO TE DEVOTE); I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say (KINGSFOLD)
Communion Motet: Kontakion for the Dead (Anon. Ukrainian)
Recessional Hymn: Jerusalem, My Happy Home (LAND OF REST)

My sister went to school there for a few years right after Fr Klotter had been named the pastor. I don’t know Fr. Chandler at all. That is at least the third parish in Louisville open to such repertoire, and as is often the case, it takes multiple people over many years to push the needle in the right direction in a stable way.

I haven't seen any such trend (Jeffrey was asking about using All Saints hymns on All Souls) either in this thread or on the ground here. With the Saturday Vigil taking precedence, it seems odd to go two years between SINE NOMINEs, but I from what I recall that happened in 2014 & 2008 too. I heard that "For All the Saints" did appear for the Friday School Mass 'within the octave' of All Souls.
