AI Hymn Generator

Any thoughts on this AI hymn generator - https://www.psalmist.ai/? It can generate a melody for any hymn lyrics you provide. One can even create a hymnal using this app.
  • In the words of Pope Leo..."We live in the age of search engines that offer us thousands of instantaneous answers. Yet, no matter how powerful they may be, they merely return what already exists and tend to give us what we already want...here is an ontological difference — even before an aesthetic one — between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others."

AI is a great tool but something feels a little inappropriate with its use within the liturgical world.

It refused to use Yankee Doodle because it claimed it was a folk song. The nerve!

I recall being told (and checking) that "Hernando's Hideaway" is a long metre tune which could be used, in place of OLD HUNDREDTH, for the classical Doxology "Praise God from Whom all blessings flow..."

“... and Holy Ghost. Olé!” It must be the Mozarabic version.

I have used Ai to analyze hymn lyrics. However, I use Ai as a research assistant. I never let it take control.

One important thing I have learned is that Ai can forget what you're working on. For example, the further away you get from your initial guidelines the more chance there is for the Ai to act on its own. The more you use the Ai, the more you realize it's limitations and strengths.

I have even used Ai to help write hymn lyrics. I provide the Ai the liturgical parts of the mass, readings, collect, preface, etc., provide the meter, and specialized prompts to keep the Ai focused on the liturgical material. Otherwise, the Ai will draw on its own vast database which you don't want.

The Ai can be used with great efficiency as long you stay in control.

  • I still have no thoughts. Every time I try to think about an "AI Hymn Generator", I find myself doubled-over, vomiting.

Things destined for use in divine worship should be REAL: real human beings making real art, etc. Artificial intelligence is just that: artificial.

Well, that's rather the $64,000 question, isn't it?

I'm having visions of sitting at the computer trying to edit out a tritone as a mysterious voice dictates (a la Hal from 2001: a Space Odyssey:) "I'M SORRY, ANNA, I'M AFRAID I CAN'T DO THAT."

Of course musical dice games like this have been published for over three centuries, including K516 if it's really by Mozart. We now have faster methods of throwing the dice! But they synthesized minuets and the like, not hymns. Unless maybe Masonic hymns...

It seems to generate awful doggerl. Like, back-of-the-funeral-leaflet kind of tripe.

    Probably people will love it.
