The era of the pastoral musician is officially over.

I wish the NACCM all the best going forward, and hope they and the CMAA can find ways to work profitably together.

The National Academy of Certified Care Managers? (lol)

I'm sure there will be no confusion between naccm.ORG and naccm.NET. No confusion at all.

Right at the top of the page it says, "A new name. The Same Focus." YMMV.

Perhaps an improvement in the name over the old "NAPM," which opened itself up to the similarity to "napalm."

I still won't rejoin given their past agendas.

I need tangible proof of reform before I'll touch it, either.

People tell me that they've been following the Overton Window liturgically rightwards. So this makes sense.

And practically any acronym you can dream up has been taken by somebody. Heck, I can't even have my own name without having a doppelmeister who is also a "Christian songwriter".

Our new name reflects our Catholic identity and honors our Catholic foundation, including our role as an auxiliary of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).

    Hmm!

Wow, this was a Catholic organization? I honestly had no idea.

Also, USCCB isn’t a great reference
  • I can't speak to what anyone else may have experienced, but I went to NPM conventions in 2018 and 2022, and I encountered a lot of less traditional musicians being quite kind to more traditional musicians. In 2018, I sat in sessions and had chats with Dan Schutte and the then-not-disgraced Church Music Voldemort, and both were incredibly gracious.

In 2022, I did the choral institute with Paul French (choir director at the 2026 Colloquium), focused around more traditional choral music, and it was fantastic and has been a great help to my ministry working with the parish choir.

I'm not currently a member, but I'll almost certainly attend the 2028 convention, as I live in the Chicago suburbs. I have no idea if the name change will help them, but I wish them the best. We need more church music organizations, not fewer.
  • The President of now NACCM, Jennifer Kluge, is a very nice woman. When I told them I planned to let my membership lapse, within an hour she was asking to have a conversation. She really took to heart some of my concerns and I did see real results. In particular they've done more work to bring people like Adam Bartlett and Angela Ricchio in to offer workshops, seminars, etc. Of course they still have the "big tent" mentality going on, but I spoke with her at length a few years ago specifically on their reputation and how my former Bishop viewed them. I think today is a very good step in the right direction for them.

I didn't either. lol. I knew there were lots of catholics in it, but I didn't know it was "catholic", let alone officially associated with the USCCB.

The pearl clutching in the FB comments about the announcement is comical and sad. A well-known certain someone opined that people would start referring to the NACCM as "Nack 'em". Do with that what you will.

I think today is a very good step in the right direction for them.
I would certainly hope that reclaiming an overt catholic identity would be a good thing.

I hope this is the death of the term “pastoral musician.” To me that always meant that feels were more important than good music. I never wanted to be pastored by a musician, I wanted them to play real music, not some hippy inspired slop. I have felt that way since I was eight or nine and the little black binders with “let us break bread together on our knees” were introduced in my Lutheran church and we sang that instead of good hymns from the green Lutheran Book of Worship. That stuff tasted like high-fructose corn syrup then and it’s still bad for you now.

Good musicians should have a pastoral spirit, although many do not; my pastor does not like the drama but believes that it comes with the territory, as much as I think that we need to be on guard and ready to examine our consciences.
