On the theme of propers... does anyone know of any other Prompt Succor Resources besides the ones in this lovely Packet? Im think Hymns, Proper Introits other than Gaudeamus ... etc?
@Matthew Roth... well I was thinking more along the lines of LOH Hymns if there were some that were other than in the common of BVM or ... sometimes there are also mores specific propers other than Gaudeamus, which I have the feeling might be the case because In USA its celebrated on the 12th but in Louisiana on the 8th... so was wondering if maybe the Ursulines or OSBs in Louisiana might have had some propers since it is a Solemnity there. At least that has been my experience with other Marian Feasts that are proper to certain places (outside of the particular place they have one version of propers which are more from commons and then inside the place they have propers that are more particular to the feast).
right, but I think that those are the propers from the Liber supplement for the US, which has all of the dioceses, and so these are marked as being for the dioceses of Louisiana where the feast was celebrated before V2.
@MatthewRoth my only doubt about that is the dating. Because Louisiana has always celebrated the Solemnity on the 8th. I have done lots of research on this feast day.
My knowledge of this feast day (Im originally from Louisiana if that helps)... is that before Vatican 2 this feast was extended to the entire USA because she was one of the first images venerated in the USA and was the only one with the privledge of a Papal Crown. The USA celebrated on the 12th but Louisiana on the 8th (I believe to commemorate the battle on New Orleans). It was only after the council that the feast was removed from the Calendar everywhere except inside Louisiana--unfortunately.
Anyway no big deal, if we cant find anything-we cant find anything. I just feel like there must be more than this.
Yeah but the Liber supplement is clear. I presume that it was moved to the 15th since the patronal feast would overlap with the Epiphany octave (and those days are still privileged in the 1960). You can celebrate a patronal feast in the octave but it causes other problems. And the supplement says Jan. 15th.
No, within Louisiana it still remained on the 8th--even with the octave. The 12th was only outside of Louisiana. This feast was not originally just for Louisiana. Thus 2 feast days. I dont want to turn this page into a Prompt Succor Date page because anyway it doesnt matter. God Bless!
well, it's important to get these things right: the Liber supplement is poorly done, but it seems like its compilers had at least some awareness of these things in different dioceses.
The problem is that there are essentially no citations, not even to a history book of dubious quality, from where one could track down the claim that the 8th is the original feast day;
Those supplements are not reliable they are a snap shot of what the person who read the proofs believed correct. Having read the correspondence in the Southwark Diocesan archives (1955-1970) the local calendar changed several times. Changes were approved and not implemented, proofs were corrected and sent back to publishers, but then further changes were made. The best place to check is the Diocesan Ordo for the relevant year and a couple of years before and after. Changes could happen from year to year.
