At Mass during Holy Week should the Marian Antiphon be omitted? I'm thinking for Good Friday, yes. But I wasn't sure about Palm Sunday or Holy Thursday. Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance!

I believe it is traditionally omitted from the Office on Holy Thursday and Good Friday only, but that doesn't mean it can't be sung elsewhere if there is time.
  • I cant remember where exactly I read this- but I did find a directive that said after the Mass of the Lords Supper the Angelus, Martyrology, and Marian Antiphon are all omitted. It was a Pre-Vat 2 Directive.

At Mass the Marian Antiphon isn’t sung; it is only sung after Compline.

During Holy Week, Compline is sung on Palm Sunday, and Monday through Wednesday.

On Holy Thursday, Compline is sung after Vespers as on Sunday (with ‘Christus factus…ad mortem’ as responsory) only when one doesn’t participate in the Mass of the Lord’s Supper.

On Good Friday, Compline is sung after Vespers as on Sunday (with ‘Christus factus…autem crucis’ as responsory) only when one doesn’t participate in the Celebration of the Passion of the Lord.

On Holy Saturday, Compline is sung as on Sunday (with ‘Christus factus…omne nomen’ as responsory) only when one doesn’t participate in the Easter Vigil.

Thank you all very kindly for your responses. We sing the Marian antiphon at every Mass, after Holy Communion. I know of several parishes who do the same. It's good to have all the information about Compline, thank you very much SM!

There isn't really a place for it on Maundy Thursday, since the Mass is followed by the Eucharistic procession. We do sing it on Palm Sunday after Mass at our parish.

Thank you, Charles, good advice. I'll put it on Palm Sunday only, then starting again on Easter Sunday.

I should have added that we do Regina Caeli at the very end of the Easter Vigil too. It segues nicely into Widor!

:( the Regina Caeli comes back only after Compline. We’re unfortunately going to have silence as we will not have an organ.

The Liber could not be more clear: whatever occasions call for, or devotional usage might require, the Marian antiphon cease after Compline of Spy Wednesday. From Matins and Lauds, there is no Marian antiphon, nor the Angelus.
