  • Does anyone know good hymn suggestions about the beatitudes for a youth choir?

"O blessed are the poor in spirit" — an Orthodox Kontakion set to the Beatitudes text by Richard Proulx, found in the Worship Hymnals:
    — Worship III, #620
    — Worship IV, #738

I've done it with children. It's very simple and easy to pick up.

The Walford-Davies is here. It’s a lovely short piece, but it only contains a single beatitude.

There are actually several settings of the Beatitudes on the Hymnary website, most of which are in Anglican chant (instead of strictly a hymn).

There's one with a refrain from a "Junior Hymnal" (composer uncredited) that looks like it might be fun. I also like the Turle setting, a double-chant.

  • "Selig seid Ihr" by Barth/Janssens is a popular hymn in Germany, originally very simply set to four parts (SATB), which even made it into the new Gotteslob (no 478).

Using it as a congregation hymn is a bit tricky because there are two melodies that alternate between the stanzas, which might be confusing for some in the pew.
