Requiem Mass - SSA - Based on Pie Jesu

In May 2022, I composed a short Pie Jesu dedicated to Alexander Giffen (son of @CHGiffen), and @PaxTecum suggested I should compose a Mass setting around it. Last year, I decided to give it a try, and the result is a Mass setting in three voices (SSA) that includes a three-part arrangement of the Pie Jesu. I have finally gotten around to posting it. Playback and free PDF are available here:

Interestingly, the Agnus Dei is what finally got me to revisit this. I had been working on my three part Mass in Honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and after completing the first twenty bars or so of this Agnus, I realized what I was writing didn't fit with the rest of the Mass and that it really should be part of a requiem.

I hope the setting may be useful for some of your choirs.
  • Thank you for this lovely setting of the Pie Jesu! My choir just performed it yesterday for our Requiem Mass.

@Drake I think we could use this, for SAT (we somehow have more actual tenors than basses or even baritones, and our SA voices aren’t quite ready for SSA by themselves). The singer who handles this aspect of our operation suggested transposing it down a major third. I’d love to put it in our repertoire list if you’d be amenable to transposing it.

@AugustBerchelmann thank you so much for singing my Pie Jesu! I hope it went well and your choir enjoyed singing it. It is especially gratifying to hear when my music is sung at Mass. I feel I am able to participate vicariously in those Masses.

@MatthewRoth I would be very happy to make an arrangement of the requiem a major third down. I will post back here once it is ready.
