brass parts for Missal chant/ ICEL Mass Setting
  • Hello,

I'm looking for brass quintet parts for the missal chant or Icel mass setting. Is there anything like that out there, or has anyone written anything similar? It's for the easter vigil mass. We sing the Latin mass setting now, and it would be awesome if the brass could come in after the priest intones the Gloria at the vigil.

I have no problem arranging things myself, I was just hopeful maybe something like it already exist. Thank you!

Normand Gouin's Mass of the Transfiguration ticks some of your boxes. I'll just quote from the product description.

Gouin has set familiar Gregorian chant Ordinary parts—Kyrie XVI in Greek, Gloria VIII in Latin, Mode VI Alleluia, Sanctus XVIII in Latin, ICEL memorial acclamations in English, ICEL Amen (expanded), and Agnus Dei XVIII in Latin—for Assembly, SATB choir, and organ, with optional Flute, Brass Quintet, Percussion, and Strings.

OK: I don’t want to hijack this or rain on anyone’s parade: but why? I think that this is a matter of first principles even.

I don’t mind an organ fanfare on Holy Thursday, at the Mass of the the Paschal vigil on Holy Saturday, or on the most festive occasions, but this seems excessive particularly since the missal chants and the Jubilate Deo Mass largely pull from ferial — even penitential — ordinaries and then the Gloria in English is for the lowest grade of feasts. De Angelis is for ordinary feasts and votive Masses, hence the name.

And as Mahrt would remind us, the mode VI Alleluia antiphon is chant but is not really chant when used throughout the year as it displaces the proper and is itself displaced from the short Vespers (Lauds…) of the vigil.

The Gouin setting is part of Morningstar’s Cathedral Series. It is aptly named insofar as this is what cathedrals and major shrines in the U.S. love to do. A little of this, a little of that, minimal coherence attempting to please everyone but virtually never ever doing the radical thing which is full propers and Latin (Gregorian and polyphonic) ordinaries. I am dumbfounded. This is another example of cheating the people.

I have used the Gouin successfully with a small, but fairly competent choir. I think you should check it out ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bur4ja2xahg ) and see if that'll work well enough for your situation.
