Ritual/Order of Blessing (VO or NO) for a movable altar in a private Oratory

    Hello!

    I am in the wonderful position of acquiring an altar for use in my home Oratory.

    (This altar was not necessarily used in a Catholic context prior to this, but its history is unknown... it is possible that it served as an ad orientem altar in a Lutheran church or something similar. There is no place where an altar stone would have been located, and the rear of the altar would have connected to a reredos or at least been placed against a wall... I digress...)

    I am in search of either of the following (given in order of preference):

    The order and Rite of blessing of an altar within the Vetus Ordo (whether in or outside of Mass).

    The Order and Rite of Blessing of an altar within the Novus Ordo (within Mass).

    Our Oratory is rather small - we could offer a High Mass with a single server, but beyond that, it would become quite cramped. Normally, I would see that any future Masses would be a low Mass.

    If anyone has any pdfs that could be shared with me of either the current rite and/or from the Roman Pontifical of either rite, I would be very grateful!

    The answers that you seek are in the pontifical, but I’m pretty sure that you cannot consecrate an altar without the stone (or it being a stone altar ultimately connected to the foundation) at least for the traditional rite. The NO makes a mess of this in part because so many inappropriate altars are used and because the relics of martyrs are no longer required.

    @MatthewRoth I know that the altar couldn't be consecrated, but I had the understanding that there was still the option within the VO to bless an altar within a private Oratory.

    Perhaps I am wrong.

    Do you (or anyone else) know what the last Pontifical to be printed was that would be used with the '62 rites?

    Has your bishop authorized this oratory? All else hinges on this.

    What I mean is that you can’t do anything without the stone even in a private oratory context.

    I’m pretty sure, but not 100% sure of this.
