O Little Town of Bethlehem and In the Bleak Midwinter both tell a similar story of the world in need of a Savior. They evoke feelings of longing and drawn-out hope that are truly adventitious. Others…

There's a lot going on. But certainly, part of the mix is the recent death of Jeff's bishop supporter., Bishop Gracida.

It seems to me to be a time for personal outreach, if …

Hi, there's a chant in the Carmelite tradition called Flos Carmeli, translated into English as Flower of Carmel and adapted to the Gregorian melody.

Flower of Carmel, vine er’er b…

I love monotony with the Psalms. I can imagine it's annoying to the organist long before it's annoying to the singers. That said, adding a single note by a change in chordation in your 3rd …

A little arrogance could be very helpful here. What are the failures/ lacks/ shows of poor taste that you've seen? What is a good way of being better that you can easily manage, without making a…

ICEL's stated reason was that something would be lost if the hymns were rhymed.

It wasn't that unrhymed hymns are preferable.

The Fr Weber resources I know of …

Matthew, you are bordering on uncivil discourse here and i hope you will tidy that up as we move forward--although I'm glad you didn't use the word "dunk" in your last comment.

Let's think about how much ancient lore the average Catholic knows.

1. "Singing is praying twice."
2. The O antiphons. Wait, they don't know that. But, they…

Prologue to the Summa Theologiae of Thomas Aquinas
Since the teacher of Catholic truth has not only to instruct those who are advanced, but it also belongs to him to initiate beginners (incipi…

Thomas the teacher wrote in such a way that his students could absorb things well. Previous beginners' manuals were, in his opinion, disorderly. They didn't help the student understand what…

Aquinas said the Summa was for beginners.

Can your congregation sing the Tantum Ergo from memory?

By the time Aquinas came to town they rhymed, the master teacher who wrote the Summa Theologiae for beginners.

Can your congregation sing O Salutaris and Tantum Ergo?

In English LM hymns, rhyme is expected by the ear and mind, regardless of the Latin use of rhyme in the original text.

But even in Latin, rhyme is a great help to memory. Aren't t…

Rhyming texts are memorable in a way non-rhyming texts are not. Think of the Pange Lingua. The rhymes help keep the words in memory.

It's not just a matter of taste but a matter o…

I think the LOH ending is proper to the LOH only, so you needn't worry about that. And "Spirit" is used in doxological formulations in the Missal, so that would make more sense than &q…

I'm not sure why it's considered polite to end Psalms, from the BIBLE, after a few verses, but not hymns.
