Directors of Music/Music Scholars for Video
  • Greetings,

My name is Albert Saenz. I work for the USCCB as their Video Specialist. I was recommended to visit here, by another member.

I am working on a video on the Marriage Rite. Basically, the video will be used during the marriage preparation time for engaged couples. It will answer some of the most basic questions about the marriage rite.

I would like to have a section of the video that talks about music. Particularly I want this section to truly emphasize the importance and beauty of proper music during the wedding. I don't want discussion of guitars, drums and saxophones, but I have every confidence that would not be a problem for anyone from this forum.

I should be a bit more specific however. I am looking to interview someone who has the authority to speak on music, meaning they have the credentials to support that they know what they are speaking of. But it is not just about credentials. I am looking for passion about music. Someone who can convince those watching the video that they should consider traditional music for their wedding. Someone who can speak with energy and zeal.

However, this is not an opportunity to speak on contemporary music and its effects in the Church. This really is not even about focusing on chant and polyphony per say. This is solely about the importance of proper music and what it can offer at the wedding Mass.

So is there anyone in the Washington, DC Metro area that fits this bill? I would appreciate any help that can be offered to me. This is not a concrete idea as of yet. I still need to get final approval. But if I can find the interest now, I can include that when I propose my ideas.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.
    Peace.

  • May I recommend Ms. Kathy Pluth of Arlington, VA. She posts frequently here, has joined the columnists at the Chant Cafe Blog, has published a marvelous compilation of new and translated hymn texts for both the Breviary and Mass, is collaborating with noted composers on various projects, including profoundly artful metrical hymn texts that accurately employ the Proper texts assigned to Masses on Sunday/HDOO, etc. She has also been a featured speaker at a number of important seminars and workshops, including the upcoming Colloquium of CMAA, our sponsor organization this June in Salt Lake City. And her children's schola comprised a portion of music ministry for a pontifical Mass at the Nat'l Shrine (across your street!) presided by Abp. Slattery of Oklahoma which was nationally broadcast. Her blog is "Hymnography Unbound." She is top drawer in our field.

Welcome Mr. Saenz! I like your work - the Corpus Christi Watershed video with Jeff O is understated and beautiful. Thank you for being here. I would like to apologize for any misunderstanding the less informed here may have expressed about USCCB, its competency and authority to speak for our Church (e.g. " 'Sing to the Lord' hardly qualifies as a Church document..")
  • Ilduce,

Your choice of name and comments are offensive.

Charles exaggerates, God bless his heart. But I would be glad to help, Albert. Mostly I know a bunch of people in the area who are better on this subject than I, and can point you to them. I'll be in Brookland this Thursday actually and would have time to meet late afternoon. Email is hymnwriter at gmail

Another problem with STTL is the supposed authority which it appears to have. (Hopefully) if you contacted the USCCB, they'll tell you it has no real authority, but from a casual look at the document on their website, you'd never guess. And another real problem with it is's uncanny ability to pull rubrics out of thin air, such as the allowance of agnus dei tropes.

The only problem: those rubrics mean absolutely nothing, since as Noel said, it wasn't approved by Rome. Personally, I sometimes wonder if it wasn't sent to Rome because they knew it would quite possibly be rejected... [/rant]

    ilduce...

you need to read the mahrt article about SttL. He is the pres of our 'congregation' and it doesn't get any clearer than that... then maybe YOU will be informed.... that is, if it's the truth you are after.
  • Also in Washington are Dr. Leo Nestor at CUA and Dr. Peter Latona at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Their credentials are impeccable.

and Kathy is also very funny.....

Dr. Nestor and Dr. Latona are excellent. (a deep bow in their general direction) But, be warned, Dr. Nestor's sense of humor is an "acquired taste" - but delicious once acquired.
