The New Year (Advent-1) will be here very soon.

    What ideas/resolutions are you formulating?

Since Easter I have been giving serious thought to "killing off" the Final Hymn.
    See ...
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGG3Zcc7yqw

The only two references known to me regarding music after
"Ite missa est...Deo gratias" ("The Mass is ended...Thanks be to God") are in
    Musicam Sacram (Mar 1967)
    http://www.vatican.va/archive/hist_councils/ii_vatican_council/documents/vat-ii_instr_19670305_musicam-sacram_en.html

    36. There is no reason why ... some other song can also, on occasions, be sung ... at the end of Mass. ...
    [...]
    65. In sung or said Masses, the organ, ... can also be played solo ... at the end of Mass.

Maybe some will be happier due to ...
    --greater conformity with Church Documents
    --less time selecting "something"
--the presider and parishioners not singing a post-liturgical accretion
--increased revenue due to making it harder to win hymn-board-lotto
    (see http://musicasacra.com/forum/comments.php?DiscussionID=2032#Item_3 )

Any points in the liturgical year that may cause trouble?
(All I can think of is the Patriotic holiday hymn concession.)

Is it time for the Open Faced Sandwich?

To compensate for the removal of the final hymn, you can add a post-communion hymn, as is suggested in GIRM, para. 88.
  • Resolution: to live and work somewhere with a parish with excellent music and liturgy.

To find more opportunities to sing Catholic.
  • 1. To celebrate an OF Mass in Latin on a regular basis at our principle parish.
    2. To "enchant" the "entrance" at the solemn Sunday Mass with the ministers entering the church from the sacristy accompanied by the Introit antiphon, proceed down the side aisle and then through the center nave accompanied by a congregational hymn.
    3. Replace the "dismissal hymn" at the solemn Mass (and others?) with the postlude only.
  • To be more happy about opportunities than I am frustrated at roadblocks.

Play on a newly restored 1928 Skinner by Christmas 2010 (ok, not in the next liturgical year, but I'd still like to work hard at getting the funds raised!)
  • To start singing the Communion proper at the Pittsburgh Oratory's 11 am Mass with my schola. We'll start with Manducaverunt for Advent.

To begin singing vespers either at my parish or school on at least a monthly basis.

Replace the composed Lamb of God with an English chant adaptation (this has already been done with the Memorial Acclamation and Amen). Add chant and chorale hymn versions of the Marian antiphons and Te Deum after Mass. Sing Alleluia verse each week in harmonized psalm tone.
