Source of hymn tune REGINA CAELI

    The hymn tune REGINA CAELI (used for ‘Be joyful, Mary, heav’nly Queen’) is attributed to Johann Leisentritt’s Catholicum hymnologium Germanicum (1584). But in the original 1584 edition, I can’t find it.

    I’m probably not looking right… Does someone know where in Catholicum hymnologium Germanicum the hymn tune may be found?

    A quick look indicated three editions of this work. Perhaps it ented in a later edition. I consulted Higginson who says it appears in Vol. II of Baumker.

    I didn't spot it in a leaf-though of 1684 either. A couple of surprises were the "Credendi" verse included with Victimae, and ERHALT UNS as Bey deiner Kirch erhalt us Herr with Turk & sects replacing Turk & papists.

    I decided to check BSB for other editions, finding two hits, both 1684. But one is labeled "Ander Theil"! Vol. 2's Regina Coeli isn't the one you want, but perhaps the tune is elsewhere in those 498 pages.

    Found it, with a little help of 2013 Gotteslob. The hymn ‘Freu dich, du Himmelskönigin’ (GL 525) is sung to the same tune, but here it is attributed to ‘Konstanz 1600’.

    Turns out to be Catholisch Gesangbüchlein, Konstanz 1600 (page 76, 159 of the scan). It has some little differences with the hymn tune usually used in English hymnals.

    Interesting! The echos of the Gregorian "Alleluia" seem to have been someone's afterthought, then.
