Easter at St. Mary’s Choir – Tribute and 1991 Recordings

A simple email from my sister — searching for the Terra Tremuit we once sang at Easter — led me back to an old 1991 cassette from St. Mary’s Choir. Digitizing it opened a door into memories, voices, and a beauty we may never hear again in quite the same way.

I’ve written the story and shared the restored recordings here:
    Easter at St. Mary's Choir

For some, these sounds will be familiar. For others, they’ll be a first encounter. Either way, I hope they carry a bit of the grace we knew.

The organ postlude is something I remember the organist playing from memory and I never encountered any music for it. If you recognize it I would be grateful for any information about it or copies of the music.

Thanks Don. As the current trustee of the St. Mary choral tradition, I found it very meaningful. It was a real time capsule, in terms of repertoire and choral sound. I imagine it was much the same in 1941 (the specifically NO elements excepted). It holds up artistically pretty well. Nice to hear what the chimes on the Mighty Austin sounded like.

Thank you, Jeff. I’m glad you found the recordings meaningful. Regarding the 1941 comparison, I wasn’t around back then either, and I suspect neither of us can say for certain what the choir sounded like at that time! However, it is wonderful to know that the artistic quality and that specific choral sound still resonate today. I agree—hearing those chimes on the Austin again really brings back the atmosphere of the space,
