Does anyone have or know of a score of Durufle's "Ubi Caritas" with text extended like in this video (includes second and third stanzas): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_Da9IiHzJk
In the 1990s I was with Mdme. Durufle at a conference. A poor soul asked about this piece and what to do with lengthening it. Mdme. Durufle looked at the person and just simply said with a strong voice, "NON."
You can do what you want, but I will always hear that answer in my head. I have sung the other verses with the chant melody. Always worked fine for me.
Mdme. Durufle was quite the lady and one heck of a player. She also protected her husband's work. I always suspected because she knew how much effort he put into composing it.
Mdme. Durufle’s objections notwithstanding, I suspect there are many such adaptations around the place… To complete the Mandatum in the time of Durufle’s original work conjures up images of a fast moving factory production line!
You can also, after the B section, just restart the piece, as the A' starts the same as the beginning of the piece. That was the tradition at my current job (until I did away with it!). It's a tough one, because it's such a great piece, but so short. What we do at my cathedral for Holy Thursday offertory is have the chant schola sing the full 3-verse hymn in the same key as the Durufle, and then segue into the Durufle to cap it off.
We've also used the Ola Gjeilo - but it isn't much longer!
Similar topic - I've also taken the Durufle Tantum Ergo and set the first 4 verses of Pange Lingua to it. The choir sings this until the Holy Thursday procession leaves the church, at which point the schola leads the plainchant over to the altar of repose.
