I am of course grateful to the CMAA for scanning and making the above available to all and sundry in pdf format… but note that some pages suffer from some grey shadow, presumably because the scan was done without chopping up the original book!

Can anyone recommend some software and settings to clean things up a bit?

If I remember right, the book was cut out of its binding: Dr. Mahrt sacrificed it for the cause.

Thanks, chonak - and my apologies for misunderstanding.

I wonder why some of the page scans have grey shadow then. More to the point, I’d like to find a way of removing this so that they don’t have it if printed out.

I hasten to add that most of the scan is excellent - but the pages in Holy Week have some marks on them.

I have used Genius Scan on my iPad with some success.

I'd use Gimp to open an individual PDF page and use the color level settings to erase marks or reduce general haziness in the background. Then I'd export the image as a PNG file or maybe a single-page PDF file.

I used to use Adobe Photoshop to clean up pages... It is not quicker than making new typeset versions using GABC or Caeciliae chant font.

Thanks, everyone - a few programs to consider.

It is a great virtue of Mass and Vespers that it effectively serves as a missal for singers.

Thanks so much, Francis. Here it is: https://media.churchmusicassociation.org/books/massandvespers.pdf

I've also ordered a copy of the freshly typeset Holy Week book from Justitias Books.

Are there particular pages that need to be attended to?

Looking at this file looks like it’s already been converted to black-and-white. If it was still a grayscale image, it would have been easy to remove backgrounds because they are different values from black. Nonetheless, point me to a few pages and I’ll give it a try.
