Flor Peeters - Missa in honorem Sancti Josephi
  • I'm currently teaching my choir Flor Peeters's Missa in honorem Sancti Josephi (the SATB version). While there are a few recordings of the Mass available, I'm not aware of any aids for learning the individual lines.

I know it's not the most common Mass setting out there, but would any of you happen to have rehearsal aids for the individual SATB parts that you would be willing to share with me? Or perhaps someone could point me in the direction of somewhere or someone who could help me track them down. I would be very grateful for any help you can offer!
  • I am also working on this Mass with my choir. Unfortunately, I don’t see any readily available rehearsal aids. You might have to resort simple midi recordings. On a separate note- I have read that Flor Peeters originally wrote this Mass for Three Voices, but later arranged it for Four voices. I’d be very interested to see his Three Voice version if anyone has access to it!
  • Thanks, Andrew - apart from the lack of rehearsal aids, there are very few full recordings of the Mass. I think the best one out there is on the album "Missa Festiva" by the Choir of Royal Holloway - I tried to contact them on the off-chance that they might have recordings, but no response so far. Unfortunately I no longer have access to an organ on which I could pre-record the organ part first and then add the voice parts myself. I am fortunate to have studied organ with a student of Peeters, so I really, really want the choir to learn this piece - it's a gem!

You are correct about the Mass originally been written for three voices, but I have never come across a recording of it. Even in terms of the printed scores, the four-part version seems to be more readily available.

There’s a copy of the 3vv version in the stacks in Radboud university library if anyone’s near Nijmegen… Put me down on the list of those who’d like to see a copy!
  • Saw that too! Wish I lived closer!

The Mass in Honor of St. Joseph by Flor Peeters does exist for Three Equal Voices as McLaughlin & Reilly Publication No. 1561. The SSA Voice Part is No. 1561a.

Last fall, I donated a large collection of Catholic Church Music (95% in Latin) to the Special Collections Library at the Catholic University of America. It included 1,016 different Masses, and No. 1561 and No. 1561a may have been included in this donation. You could get in touch with the Director of Special Collections at CUA to see if it was included. If you want, PM me and I will send you her contact information.

I have several extra copies of No. 1562 SATB and Organ edition of this Mass, but it appears you have this already.

The Kyrie, Sanctus/Benedictus, and Agnus Dei from this Mass and also Peeters' Agnus Dei were recorded at the Church of the Advent, Boston; and the recording is on my website: catholicdevotionalhymns.com Click "shorter sessions" on the left to find this recording.
  • I have a copy of the three-part mass. Anyone interested? Always happy to hear his music is still sung.

I'm sure you all know this but just to be sure: use direct messages for personal data.
  • Dear oldhymns, the Church of the Advent recordings are exquisite! Thank you. Paul
