Edmund Stuart Palmer, the author’s original text in Swahili, Yesu Bin Mariamu. One can see in the second half of the first stanza a paraphrase of Adoro te devote. The text was first published in the English Hymnal with the tune Warum sind der Thränen rechristened as Swahili. The pairing of the text with Adoro te was the work of the indefatigable Winfred Douglas for the Hymnal 1940. It was picked up for RC use by World Library and J.S. Paluch, now part of GIA. The first stanza is sometimes omitted, and so appears as Think, O Lord, in mercy on the souls... .
