Ave Maris Stella for SATB
  • Pax! A setting of the Vespers hymn Ave Maris Stella. I chose to keep the parts in closed score format since there is not much counterpoint. the structure is simple with verses 1,2,6, and 7 having identical music while verses 3,4,5 provide a contrasting section. I hope this may be of use!

  • Gorgeous and very accessible! The 3rd verse is particularly beautiful text painting. I found myself bound up in the wandering harmonies, initially puzzled--but now I think they suit the theme, as the ocean can be mysterious and wandering.

I did find the last measure a little trite, I think it is the mi-re-do motif in the soprano, which seems basic after the wandering melody that precedes it. My inner ear wanted a more floating resolution with the soprano on the 3rd or the 5th.
  • Thanks for the feedback! Yes, that last measure is what you described; going back to revise it!
  • Changed the soprano to end on the D instead of the mi-re-do.

I also found the 3rd verse particularly beautiful. There are some very beautiful passages with lots of rich texture.

  • Posting some piano parts for those who want it. I've separated the top two voices (soprano and alto) from the lower two.
