The celebrations for the Palestrina anniversary, so far as I have seen them, have tended to cater for those who are keen to hear his
music for the first time, rather than to make the most of this rare opportunity to explore unfamiliar sides of his output. If there have been more performances of the Missa Papae Marcelli there have been as few as ever of about a hundred of his other Masses, let alone his madrigals. Nor do I have the impression that important biographies have been written or new areas of scholarship opened up. In particular I do not feel that the reappraisal Palestrina so urgently needs has been properly undertaken. One can only hope that the general interest which the activities of this year may have generated will in the future encourage publishers and record producers to take risks, that the achievement of his anniversary will have been simply to have raised his profile. Perhaps by the next anniversary, in 2025, people will be competing to record his complete madrigals.
