EF Rubric for Christmas Eve
  • Looking ahead to next Christmas, I note that Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday. Should the organ be played solo or not? The former rule was that organ was allowed whenever the deacon and subdeacon wore the dalmatic and tunicle instead of folded chasubles, but the 1958 instruction (DMS, no. 81a) seems to include the Mass of the vigil under the prohibition.
  • Vigils, if I recall, are in violet, and thus are penitential. As such.... organ shouldn't be played, whether a loophole exists in the instruction or not.

To make a valuable distinction, however, Mass that morning will be Mass of the Vigil of Christmas (Hodie scietis), but Mass at midnight will be Christmas' first Mass.

  • Vigils, if I recall, are in violet, and thus are penitential.
Correct, but note that the alleluia is only said/sung at that Mass when it falls on a Sunday.
