Jean Mouton (1450’s - 1522), whose very name suggests descent from shepherds, composed several Christmas motets including the Quaeramus cum pastoribus heard before tonight’s Mass. “Noe, sing Jerusalem, be glad and rejoice for today the Savior is born; he lies in a manger, shining like the sky. Lift your heads, ye gates, and let in the King of Glory. Who this King of Glory? The Lord strong and mighty.”

Christmas Day Dec. 25 Leontovich: Carol of the Bells
Mykola Leontovych (1877-1921) wrote his most famous work in 1916 as a hymn to springtime (the title Shchredrik means ‘bounty’ in Ukrainian). He was assasinated during the Russian Civil War and the piece began its career as a Christmas carol with English words following a benefit concert at Carnegie Hall 100 years ago.

  • Same old at St. Sebastian Akron 1PM (why fix if not broken?):
    Pro/re: Adeste fideles
Proper: Mass of the day, psalm-toned verses for Gradual and Alleluia
Ordinary: Mass of the Shepherds (Pietro Yon)
    Offertory motet: Gaudete
Communion: In natali Domini (Specialnik codex)

BUT...I got blend, intonation, and high fs that didn't sound like a murdered rabbit.

I guested on Christmas Eve at the other TLM in town (St. Paul's), which doesn't have a standing schola. I don't think that the DM there (Heidi Guttermuth) is on here, so I'll brag on her behalf. Intimate affair: soprano (teaches at their Chesterton Academy and has a Prottie choir), me, Heidi (organ/voice), violin.

    Music before Mass:
    Psallite (Praetorius/Robinson)
Puer natus in Bethlehem a2 (Praetorius, Musae sionae IX)
Tu scendi dalle stelle (de Liguari/Arantes)
    Gesu Bambino (violin)
Organ pieces including Brahms 122/8 (Father was going to sing the Christmas Proclamation but chickened out.)
    Gaudete (Piae Cantiones/Batastini)
Puer natus in Bethlehem (some note-against-note medieval harmonization)
    Ave Maria (J.B.Tresch)

    Music at Mass:
    Processional: Adeste fideles
Asperges (took us by surprise, but it was the principal mass of Sunday)
    Proper:full Gregorian Mass at Midnight
    Ordinary: Mass VIII, Credo III
Offertory: Ave Maria, from Two Hymns to Our Lady (Gerald Near)
Communion: Panis Angelicus (Francesco Gasparini, ed. Scarpa)

The Near was very nice, and easy; I plan on doing it with my own group. Gasparini also effective, and not difficult for a solo singer (I'd have liked it down a step...) Good to not have to "drive" and to be able to concentrate on my own music-making.

Where does one find the Willan Silent Night?/blockquote>

Willan's "Silent Night" can be found in the New Saint Basil Hymnal which was published circa 1958. The ATB parts all move in just the right ways to create charm and a lullaby like lilt.

  • Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Masses:

Processional: O Come, All Ye Faithful
    Gloria: Heritage Mass, O. Alstott
Psalm: All the ends of the earth…, B. Hurd
    Alleluia: Jubilation Mass, J. Chepponis
Prep: Angels We Have Heard on High
Holy, Mystery, Amen, Lamb of God: Heritage Mass, O. Alstott
Communion: Silent Night & Infant Holy, Infant Lowly
    Recessional: Joy to the World

I served as cantor at the early morning Christmas Day Mass. We did Goss’ “See Amid the Winter’s Snow” as a prelude. Many people asked me where we found that hymn and asked us to use it more during the Christmas season. Noted for next year. Hurd’s Psalm 98 wasn’t my pick, but it was done tastefully. We used to do the Haugen/Haas one but ceased for obvious reasons.

Didn’t attend Midnight Mass this year. The music usually differs a bit due to the choir, but I’m assuming the lineup was nearly identical.
