Psalms by Howard Hughes / Robert Kreutz
  • This is somewhat of an odd question, but does anyone know where I can find copies of Howard Hughes' psalm settings? I heard his version of Psalm 147 (Praise the Lord, who heals the brokenhearted) today at Mass. The copyright is dated 1972. I can't find these anywhere. I've checked GIA and OCP, but that didn't help. Are they part of a larger collection that is OOP?

I have the same issue with Robert Kreutz's settings. He has many nice settings, but they are impossible to find.

There is some info in this thread https://forum.musicasacra.com/forum/discussion/17363/howard-hughes-psalm-tones/p1
Including a pdf of 9 psalm tones, Prophecy, and Gospel Canticle tones, with accompaniments
  • I hadn't heard of him until now...I thought "Is he being confused with Gordon Getty?".
There are 22 hits of "Howard Hughes" and "musical scores" on Worldcat. They were all published by GIA, generally as octavos. You could approach GIA directly to see what they would charge for a scan and use of an OOP item. That might work better than approaching the (generally Catholic university) libraries; in general, academic libraries aren't dealing with the literally-unwashed public these Covidian days.

There is a nice volune of Kreuz's psalm settings published by OCP. They are beautifully done with choral and instrumental parts.
