Psalm for Our Lady of the Rosary/Spanish Magnificat

    Hi All,

    The Psalm for Our Lady of the Rosary (7 October) is the Magnificat. I'm curious as to what is the current approved translation for liturgical use. The lectionary has one (Mi alma glorifica al Senor...) , and the LotH has another (Proclama mi alma la grandeza del Senor...). Are they proper to their own use or is there one that supersedes the other? Thanks in advance.

    If it's approved for use in the Office, it's OK to use it in the Mass also. There isn't a separation between different categories of liturgical use, for Scripture translations.

    Sure there is. For example, the New American Bible translation of the psalter is not approved for use in the revised Liturgy of the Hours unless a particular psalm is sung. That means that USA-published versions of the English-language Liturgy of the Hours must still use the (old) Grail psalms, even though NAB psalms may be substituted if they are sung.

    Another thing about Spanish translations of liturgical books. If the USCCB has approved a Spanish translation of a particular liturgical book, it must be used in the USA. If it has not, then an approved translation from any Spanish-speaking country may be used in the USA. The USCCB has approved Spanish translations of the missal, lectionary (still not published), RCIA, Bautismo, Matrimonio. For all other liturgical books (including the LOTH), Spanish-speakers in the USA may legitimately use the translations from Mexico, Spain, Argentina, Colombia, etc.

    Thanks, Fr. Krisman, for pointing out the distinction! Yes, I was placing this in the context of singing.
