You have to take a red-eye flight to get there.

Sleepy Eye is WSW of Minneapolis, about 105 miles from MSP airport, about a 2 hour drive.
  • (purple on) It's not near a big city, so what does it matter, except that a small remnant of die hard nail-biting, [fill in rest of epithets at will] people is doing its best to hold back the tide of progress. Now, in the Amazon......(purple off)

    Home, home of the strange.
Where the trads and the NRA play.
And never is heard an encouraging word.
And the clouds have lead linings all day.

All kidding aside, I know it is a remote location. Wishing the good people of Sleepy Eye all the best.

  • They're getting a new organ, as I understand.

Not exactly -- we love our organ. It was just enchambered in 1947. We're restoring casework and expanding tonal resources, thanks to St. Louis.

It's also a 15 minute drive from the New Ulm Cathedral, which is starting a nice little organ recital series tonight for their new Nordlie organ. I hear the director's a pretty fun guy who loves Palestrina and Bruckner when he has enough capable voices.

Just in case you're in that neck of the woods checking out our wonderful lead linings. Plus we have an Applebee's and brew Schell's beer!

    *end shameless plug*

I suspect it's a lovely place. That part of the country generally is - except in the winter. LOL.

    Where is Sleepy Eye?

I guess y'all never read any Laura Ingalls-Wilder books ("Little House on the Prarie")?

How does the bitter cold of a Minnesota winter define/alter organ tuning seasons?

Every day is organ tuning day! Actually the organ has a humidity machine installed to help keep the the pipes at as consistent a humidity level as possible throughout the year. I've gotten really good at tuning the reeds as they go flat about once a month haha.

The organ definitely has more tuning issues during the summer months than the winter, as summer temperatures fluctuate so much that the AC doesn't always turn on when it needs to. The heat is always humming, at least.

It's only about a week before, so you'll have students in town. If you do it again for All Souls, it would be a cool opportunity for them
