    Curious what everyone is singing for Immaculate Conception later this week! Also, am I correct that the Gloria should be sung on this day, even though it falls during Advent?

    Here's what I have planned:

    Processional: Immaculate Mary
    Offertory: Ave Maria (either chant hymn setting or solo setting if I have the cantor forces)
    Communion: Chant proper in English from the Lumen Christi Missal "Glorious things are spoken of you, O Virgin Mary"
    Recessional: Salve Regina (chant hymn)

    This would be a good solemnity to initiate more elaborate melody for the verses of the responsorial psalm, as we have discussed on another thread. Also, for Christmas. Compose or improvise developed chant-like melody different for each verse.

    Low Mass. Our regular priest will be busy that morning. And, to add insult to injury, I'll be rehearsing for a Christmas concert in the morning, so I won't even be able to make that. And, since it seems like everyone in Traddom finds the concept of a mass on the evening of a holy day of obligation during the weekend (specifically Saturday) to be anathema, it looks like the only time I'll able to go will be tonight.
    For the vigil.
    At the guitar mass.

    But - I look on the bright side. The Christmas concert I'm doing will feature a lot of beautiful music from mediaeval times up to the present, and I'll be able to attend another concert tomorrow evening where the old chant choir I founded will be singing the O Antiphons. So that'll be worth it.

    I Just realized I joined the forum a year ago in order to complain/get guidance about not singing "O Come O Come Emmanuel" prior to the third Sunday of Advent. Thanks for all I have learned this past year. I have been educated and often entertained and frequently in awe at the amount of knowledge many here have of liturgy,etc.

    Nine years ago, on the First Sunday of Advent, I returned to the Church by receiving Holy Communion, rushing from the choir loft with my poor bewildered mother, right after singing Cornelius's The Three Kings as a motet. Here's to a Happy New Year, Carol, with lots more learning!

    I've not heard of Blaenwern being done except in England.
    What a magnificent tune with much gravitas.
    I wish that it would catch on over here.

    Oh, Blaenwern has even made it into the missalettes. It appears in WLP's Seasonal Missalette from time to time with one of Kathleen Pluth's hymns.

    Bryn Calfaria is another exquisite and powerful Welsh tune that is rarely heard over here. For those (fortunate ones) who have The English Hymnal in their libraries, it appears at no. 319 with the glorious hymn text, 'Lord, Enthroned in Heav'nly Splendour, First Begotten From the Dead'. It makes a fine anthem.

    I'm genuinely curious. I thought the "Alma Redemptoris" was supposed to be sung instead of the "Salve Regina". At least, that's what our Pastor is having us do throughout Advent and possibly Christmas.

    You are correct in that this is indeed the season for Alma Redemptoris Mater. I've noticed that for very many (most?) Catholics the Salve Regina is the default Marian antiphon, no matter the season of the year.

    @KyleM18 After Compline a seasonal Marian Anthem is sung... Some places also sing / sang a seasonal Marian Anthem after Mass, Vespers and other hours of the Divine Office. I don't think you will find a book mandating the practice, as it is only a custom, so it is perfectly fine to sing the Salve Regina. I just think it is more interesting to follow the seasonal arrangement.

    I know the Dominicans traditionally sing the Salve Regina all year round. If memory serves they do this in the Jerusalem Rite as well as all Gallican rites, too.

    We've been smuggling in the simple tone Alma Redemptoris whenever we have a little space to fill (since we can't do it with the organ). The idea is to get people familiar with a Marian antiphon that's not Salve Regina.

    I favor keeping the conventions of the four Marian antiphons in season, and when we sing Vespers, we always conclude with the proper Marian antiphon. (Not everyone has noticed the rubric for Vespers in the extraordinary form, which prescribes singing the Marian antiphon, if Compline is not to follow immediately.) I considered singing Alma Redemptoris Mater, but Salve Regina is well known, and our people sing it well. Since we sang a polyphonic Mass, I felt that the congregation should have the opportunity to sing something they knew well. In the ordinary form, even in the office at the conclusion of Compline, one of three Marian antiphons isnow prescribed, Alma Redemptoris Mater, Ave Regina Caelorum, or Salve Regina, or another prescribed by the conference of bishops.

    I had the impression (I'm now not sure it wasn't gained from perusing GIA/OCP products rather than the LOTH) that the OF prescribed Regina caeli at Eastertide and Salve for the rest, with the option of substituting Alma & Ave during their traditional seasons. This might represent a return to the 13c 'summer of the liturgy' when Salve seems to have been sung year-round, with votive antiphons assigned by weekday; New Grove has an interesting table of 4 French uses from the 15c:

    That might be because you're tainted by Tridentine renaissance humanist corruption, Chris ;-) "Springtime of the Liturgy", once much bandied about by liturgists, is already taken, as a euphemism for Dark Ages. Any lover of melismatic chant will be able to assent to Henry Adams' estimation of the 13c (if you haven't already, read Mont St. Michele & Chartres!) although it's perturbing to a musician when he writes off the next century as the setting in of the rot.

    (I hope the table above is a bit more legible now I inserted a few hard-spaces.) (More than) 17 votive antiphons is not as limited as 4, and [2 or 4] isn't exactly a further limit. Many Lutheran churches mix things up by seasonally switching the "Hymn of Praise" between Glory to God and This is the Feast of Victory, which might strike some as pointless.
