    The Church, who knows. The rest of us, why would we care? The place seems to be failing left and right, so would things be better for the citizens? Don't know, but as now constructed, the state seems a model of government inefficiency and spending beyond its means.

    We had this debate in 1849 when slavery was the main issue. The scenario of Los Angeles and the rest of 'Coastal Cal.' begging their water from an inland John Bircher state seems rather implausible.

    Yeah, I understand the southern part can't find enough water to baptize a Presbyterian. Desalinization, maybe? I'm from an area "awash" in water, so not familiar with their water issues.

    Richard, did it occur to you that the Birchers correctly predicted many of the societal mutations we've actually undergone, and that LA was a genesis point for same? (I'm not a Bircher.) Inland (Central) California is not necessarily a Birch bastion, BTW.
    Under this tri-configuration I don't see any political relief from the Democrat/Socialist political agenda that has controlled us prior to Schwarzeneggar.

    As far as the Church goes, I'd ponder whether Brown/Obama's agenda of destabilizing the Church's tax exempt status through impeaching our proscriptions regarding marriage would have little resistance in N. Cali and (New California) regions. If it does, then SoCal would also fall prey.

    In any case, Gavin Newsom's ascendancy will prove a major disaster in all manners. He's truly despicable.

    To take the question away from its specific locational hook, which is dubious in terms of likelihood, but to the more general situation of how might the Roman Catholic Church organizationally respond to the mitosis of a US state: while it was common in the 19th century, as the 20th century unfolded it's become rare for a diocese to straddle state lines (unlike metropolitan provinces, where that is common). The most notable example is Washington DC (frankly, I'd prefer to return to the WW2 era of an archdiocese of Baltimore-Washington), but also Norwich CT (includes Fishers Island NY). The practical effect of a diocese straddling jurisdictions is that corporation law (corporation sole), and significant parts of employment, insurance and taxation law are state-level matters, among other areas of law and regulation, and straddling makes practical governance more complex.

    (I don't disagree with it, but you're usually more circumspect when you say some conduct is reprehensible or some person is an idiot.)

    Melo, I associate Birchers more with the Owens Valley (perhaps I'm mistaken; isn't there a headquarters in Bishop?) where the Aquaduct war was waged with dynamite in the last century. It seems to me a change in the status quo has the chances of a snowball in Death Valley. I'm not as familiar with the South central valley as with my native Sacramento, but I'm very fond of your corner for the sake of William Saroyan and a more recent discovery, Gerald Haslam.
