    Does anyone know of a commentary that discusses the melodic similarity of the Magnificat antiphon for Vespers I of Corpus Christi and the Sanctus of Missa de Angels?

    I don't offhand, but I think the Sanctus is a contrafactum (reworking) of the antiphon.

    So Gastoué pushes the origin of the tune back to 11th century Normandy.
    Thanks Gamba for pointing to this article, it helps me to understand why Missa de Angelis is SO popular. (Off at a tangent) his observation that the Kyrie would be better suited to Alleluia is one I disagree with. I suspect that the reason this chant has been left in Greek is that the Hebrew chesed, now commonly translated as 'loving-kindness' , is very difficult to translate as an imperative without being very long winded. ¿ Is this the only imperative we commonly address to God? [Without a preliminary 'we beseech Thee to ...'.]
