Questions about chant-based organ scores have appeared several times.
I have started this discussion to capture the suggestions and insights
    in one place.

When contributing, may I suggest that each post should have ...
    one composer
    one book or score title
identify the chant or fragments it contains (chant text, Liber Usualis page, Graduale page)
maybe a URL pointing to an online score
maybe a URL pointing to an online sound file
    avoid abbreviations
Use the "edit" link to update your contribution as you discover more info related to your entry.

    Why chant-based organ scores?
Well, if you need an answer, how about this ...

Organists & Organ Playing in 19th-Century France & Belgium
    by Orpha Ochse

    page 139:

One of the most persistent and perhaps the most effective
advocate for the use of Gregorian melodies in organ music
was Alexandre Guilmant. Like his teacher Lemmens and his
colleague Gigout, Guilmant sought a greater unity between
organ and choral music in the liturgy. In 1895 he explained:
"In the alternating pieces it is necessary for the organist
to play the Gregorian melody or, at least, versets based on
these themes. I think that there are very interesting things
to be written in the polyphonic style with these old tonalities
and on such beautiful chants as these. The German organists have
composed pieces based on the melodies of chorales, forming a
particularly rich organ literature; shouldn't we do likewise
    with our Catholic melodies?"

Well, somewhat being biased, I commend Charles Tournemire's l'Orgue Mystique to you.
My somewhat verbose entry on this forum.

    http://musicasacra.com/forum/comments.php?DiscussionID=1297&page=1#Item_0

Tournemire set 52 offices for the year. However, they do not correspond to the year per se. The organ of Tournemire's time only played for one Sunday in Advent and only one in Lent. There are also feast days outside Sunday that he set.

Wondering about what chants he used on a Sunday? Email me privately for that info as the article that annotates that is not for general release. In general he used the introit chant for the prelude, the offertory chant for the offertory and the communion for the communion piece. The other two pieces in each suite are more complicated.

The great opus of chant based liturgical music.

I like what I have heard of the Charles Callaghan books
  • I unfailingly include organ vs. choir literature in recitals, and whenever possible and appropriate, at actual liturgies.
    My favourites are -
the de Grigny hymns: Veni Creator and Verbum Supernum Prodiens nec Patris
the Titelouze hymns: Veni Creator and Ad Coenam Agni Providi (this tune has been paired also with
Ad Regias Agni Dapes and Te Lucis ante Terminum)
The literature from this school is, of course, almost limitless.
Of great interest also are the Hymn and Magnificat settings by Samuel Scheidt.

Of course one must mention Durufle. also many other French composers of the Romantic School, including Dom Paul Benoit.
  • With great enthusiasm, I recommend "A Gregorian Liturgical Year" by Gerald Near. (Aureole Editions) Composer Near bases his improvisations on the proper of the mass--introit, gradual, alleluia, offertory, communion--one for each Sunday of the year. These pieces are of moderate difficulty.

Gerald Near has composed a fair few sets of organ works based on chant. "Chantworks" (multi-volume) and the "St. Augustine Organbook" come to mind. Some require more preparation than others, but they all have a good "payoff."

This thread is 3 years old, and yet there is still only volume 1 available of Near's "A Gregorian Liturgical Year?"
    (sad face....)
  • Now that we are talking about chant based organ scores again, do any of you Anglophiles out there know the source of the chant George Oldroyd used as the basis of his Liturgical Improvisation titled "Verbum Supernum Prodiens"? It's the last of a set of three.

These are very effective pieces by the way, and not very difficult.

Marajoy, I e-mailed Mr. Near a few years ago and he said he was working on volume 2 (he mentioned that more folks than just me were clamoring for more!) . . . I e-mailed him again about 2 months ago and never heard back. It may not be happening, sad to say.

I just recently discovered a book by Philip G. Kreckel entitled "Melodia Sacra: Twenty Organ Pieces in Mode and Rhythm of Gregorian Chant" (copyright 1942). I've only tried out a few of them so far, but they sound nice and aren't difficult.

I'd also like to put in another plug for the music of Dom Paul Benoit, who is without a doubt my favorite 20th century composer. I've recorded several of his elevations and other pieces, which you can find on YouTube.

I just borrowed a copy of Rene Quignard's "Feast of the Most Blessed Sacrament: Organ pieces on Liturgical Themes". There are some really wonderful pieces in this 20-page collection, much of it for manuals only or pedal ad lib. Did he compose more collections like this? It was published by the old "GIA" the 1940s.
  • I am re-engraving Dom Paul Benoit in Finale so I can create MIDI files to enjoy and pray with this music I first heard nearly fifty years ago. He is the BEST!

jpal- it's not a question of whether it's going to go away... it's a matter of the fact that it is *still* illegal to download in the US. (I have, however, considered taking my computer across the border to Canada, finding an internet hook-up, and downloading the whole thing... ;-) )

  • Mara,

I did that about a year and a half ago. I'm glad I'm not alone in my thinking. My wife was away for a weekend, so I took an overnighter up to Niagra Falls and downloaded the whole thing.

  • @Steve Collins ‒ found my way to this forum thanks to a web-search for Quignard, and found two postings. Here's my response … l'Organiste Grégorien, originally published by the Procure Générale in Paris in 1928, includes as far as I know volumes for Christmas, Easter, Ascension, Pentecost, Corpus Christi, Sacred Heart, Assumption and other Marian feasts, and All Saints; they include an abundance of short-ish preludes ‒ Entrée, Offertoire, Elévation, Communion, Sortie for mass, and then Entrée, five psalm antiphons, Magnificat antiphon and Sortie for Vespers ‒ on the propers. I've been lucky enough to find (and, occasionally, have the chance to use) all of them, except the mass for Pentecost.

You'll find my e-mail address in the Quignard page on my site: feel free to get in touch.

Planchet was born near Toulouse France, studied at the Ecole Niedermeyer (School for Church Music in Paris) until 1878, then was at Versailles Cathedral as choirmaster and organist; and from 1895 at St Trinite as choirmaster (succeeding Emile Bouichere) during the titulaires Alexandre Guilmant (1871–1901) and Charles Quef (1901–1931). He taught harmony at the Ecole Niedermeyer, and was secretary of the Societe des Compositeurs. He contributed to Encyclopedie du Conservatoire an essay on conducting (L'art du maitre de chapelle). His compositions include: violin sonata; piano trio; Le Grand Ferre (piece for soloist chorus orchestra); Breiz (symphonic poem in three parts); Ildis (lyric drama in three acts); opera; songs; Masses; organ pieces.

  • Corpus Christi?

de Grigny has a nice set of organ versets on Verbum supernum, office hymn at Lauds of C.Chr. He also has several versets on Pange lingua.

Don't overlook Langlais' marvelous Rhapsodie Gregorienne. It is based on Sacris solemnis, Verbum supernum, and Lauda Sion. The first two are office hymns for C.Chr., and the latter is the sequence for the same.

(Granted, this work is a tad lengthy for mass use - unless one has a devoted coterie of postlude listeners - but is always splendid for a sacred recital. It is last in the set of Neuf Pieces.)

(Incidentally, there are two 'verbum supernums'. One is an office hymn in Advent, and the other 'verbum supernum prodiens nec patris' is office hymn at Lauds of C.Chr. It is easy to confuse them.)

  • I have in front of me a newly acquired Ten Chorale Preludes on Gregorian hymns, for Organ by Flor Peeters (Opus 76).

    Contents;

a collection using the following chant tunes:

Adoro te Devote (the well-known Communion hymn, set several times)

    Aeterna Christi Munera

Iam Lucis Orto Sidere (Prime's hymn)

A Solis Ortus Cardine (Advent, I think)

    Chorus Novae Jerusalem

    Tantum Ergo Sacramentum

    Jesu Nostra Redemptio

Deus Tuorum Militum (feasts of Martyrs)

Ut Queant Laxis (Feast of St. John, from which piece of chant we get the "solfeggio" system)

O Nata Lux de Lumine (Christmas)

Peeters has other chant settings as well (opus 75 and 77), which encompass many other well known chants. I particularly find the settings of Sacris solemnis juncta sint guadia and Placare Christe, servulis in op. 77 to be particularly effective.

Also I would add another plug for David Hurd's A Liturgical Year, which includes a setting of one of the proper chants for each Sunday and feast of the year.

Whoops! Well yes, he is quite different from Bob Hurd, but in my tired state I had the wrong composer—I meant Gerald Near, who was mentioned in an above post.

The Glazanov is a major piece, and I have never head it!
He is a fine composer. Stravinsky in his memoirs writes fondly of his musical and personal influence.

ghmus7, I am interested in Benoit and would love to read your dissertation. What is its title, so I can order it on interlibrary loan.
  • The Mulliner Book has numerous relatively short pieces based on office hymns and the Gloria tibi Trinitas antiphon and its offspring. Ditto the Buxheimer Orgelbuch, the Robertsbridge Codex, and the eldest extant source of alternatim versets, the late XIVth century Faenza Codex. All these date from late mediaeval to early renaissance, and while most of the pieces are alternatim versets, many would be useful for our liturgies as voluntaries at the offertory, communion, and before mass.

Also, there is a collection of early cantus firmus pieces called Gregorian Chant Themes in Organ Music Before 1750, edited by Dom Claude Gay, O.S.B., and translated by Willm. Tortolano. It may be had from GIA.

It has an excellent bibliography of cantus firmus pickings and features some pieces and alternatim versets from the XVth through the XVIIIth centuries. While I disagree with some highly questionable editorial procedures (notably the arrangement of independent pedal parts for several examples of very early music) and a very few factual errors in an otherwise excellent preface, the book is quite valuable as a bibliographical and early music resource. I commend it highly to all. There are versets based on Ave Maris Stella by none other than Paul Hoffhaimer, several Spanish works, an anonymous French Magnificat, and much more.

I have our fellow Forum Member, Dr Gregory Hamilton, to thank for sending me a copy of this fine book, which has brought me much pleasure.
