Reasons for joy and hope in the 21st century
  • "One year after the chapel of the national sanctuary of Our Lady of Walsingham was elevated to the rank of a basilica by Pope Francis, its rector, Monsignor John Armitage, announced that England will be consecrated to Mary in 2020.
For the occasion, he approved the text of a new novena to Our Lady of Walsingham.

"In 2020, England will once again be raised to the title of “dowry of Mary” – a title attributed to the Mother of God since the 11th century, but that was lost with the Reformation and the birth of Anglicanism. In 1893, Pope Leo XIII alluded to it during an audience with English pilgrims, evoking “the wonderful filial love which burnt within the heart of your forefathers towards the great Mother of God”.

"The sanctuary of Walsingham is one of the ten sanctuaries dedicated to the Mother of God on English soil. The Blessed Virgin appeared there in 1061 to a Saxon noblewoman and asked her to build a replica of her home in Nazareth. The copy of the Santa Casa was built and the faithful flocked to the site. Throughout the Middle Ages, Walsingham was one of northern Europe’s most important pilgrimage sites."

I wasn't aware that the title 'dowry of Mary' had been lost. We still say the prayer for England that goes 'O Mary our Queen and our Mother, look down upon England thy dowry, and upon us all who greatly hope and trust in thee etc....'
The bishops of Scotland consecrated the country to the Immaculate heart of Mary earlier this year, with no ensuing howls of Protestant outrage. I wonder why our English bishops are waiting until 2020?

Good news! Maybe CDWDS will stop trying to persuade us to abandon the indult by which we add a Marian prayer to the Prayer of the Faithful. Another sign maybe, is that they have authorised the title Our Lady of Rushen on the Isle of Man for Sep 12th (honouring a miracle in 1249).
