Tristropha Pronunciation
  • Assuming an Anglicized pronunciation, which of these is preferable?
    1. ˈtɹɪʃtɹəfə (TRISS-truh-fuh)
    2. ˈtɹaɪʃtɹoʊfə (TRY-stroh-fuh)
    3. tɹaɪˈʃtɹoʊfə (try-STROH-fuh)
    4. ˈtɹaɪʃtɹəfə (TRY-struh-fuh)
    5. ˈtɹɪʃtɹoʊfə (TRISS-troh-fuh)
    6. tɹɪˈʃtɹoʊfə (triss-TROH-fuh)
    7. something else?

Four guys walk into a bar in a Midwestern city, and the bartender asks, "What'll you guys have dis afternoon?" They look at each other and nod, and then one of them says, "Gimme t'ree Stroh fuh ma frien's, an' I'll have a Heinekens."
  • Kathy is correct - for a Latin pronunciation of a Latin word.

However, for the Anglicised pronunciation which madorganist assumes, it would be...
    Number 2 -

    or maybe -
    TRY-STROH-fuh.
  • That's /ˈbiːstɹoʊ/ or /ˈbɪstɹoʊ/, Kathy?
  • So, a Bi-stro-pha would be a bistro at some distance away???

There's triolet, which comes via French, but otherwise I think trees are ruled out. It's hard to find a pattern in trigon/trigonometry & trivet/tripod, though.
