Alto and Bass (Schola) Section Leader

The Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart is seeking section leaders for its choir and schola cantorum, to begin this fall.

Our choral programs cultivate repertoire from the best of the Catholic sacred music tradition, including Gregorian chant, Renaissance polyphony, modern choral music, English chant propers and traditional hymnody. Our program fosters both musical excellence and deep and fruitful liturgical prayer on the part of the congregation and within the choir itself. The choir sings under the direction of Crista Miller, Organist and Director of Music with the assistance of Michael Emmerich, Associate Organist.

Section leaders must have excellent choral musicianship, are able to model good singing technique, be excellent sight-readers, be able to lead sectionals and have basic keyboard skills as well as comport themselves as leaders to the choir and assembly for respectful and reverent worship during all liturgical celebrations.

Rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Quartets from the schola cantorum sing weekly at the Sunday 9:00 a.m. Mass. All members of schola cantorum sing with the Cor Jesu volunteer choir weekly at the Sunday 11:00 a.m. Mass. Section leaders may also serve as cantors for regular Saturday evening and Sunday morning and evening liturgies. There are numerous occasions for solo work, cantor opportunities and conducting (commiserate with experience) throughout the liturgical and summer calendar. Schola cantorum always has first right of refusal for special Masses including weddings and funerals.

Section Leaders are selected by audition, personal interview and references.
Audition repertoire requirements shall include a solo (oratorio, opera, art song, etc…) plus several Sight-singing selections.
