    Whence your attribution of Jesu dulcedo cordium to Herr Luther?
    This is a cento from the lengthy Jesu dulcis memoria which insistently is attributed to Bernard of Clairvaux, though scholarly opinion for quite some time now holds it to be the work of an anonymous English Cistercian.

    Below is an early version I got from Peter Hallock. I did not research the roots but took what Carl and Peter came up with. Carl Crosier was the choir master at the Lutheran Church of Honolulu and Peter Hallock's friend and publisher. This text is particularly appropriate for Lent. In fact it was the frontispiece for all five of our Lenten Compline Offerings. You can see how the inflection changed over the eight years I've had with the piece. The second we did last night with the women on their Lent V Compline.

    There is a real problem with the text and title of your very nice music.
    The text is not Jesu dulcedo cordium. It isn't close!
    It is surely a mystery how you got it tangled up with your hymn.

    'Lord, Keep Us Steadfast in Your Word'
    is C. Winkworth's translation of Erhalt uns Herr bei deinem Wort,
    which is indeed by Martin Luther.

    Could it be (and I'm reasonably sure it is) the case that Jesu dulcedo cordium is the name of the plainchant melody of this setting?

    Check out this page at hymnary.org. I think this might explain the confusion and wrong attribution of the text.
