Tantum Ergo III and VI by Victoria

    In case someone is looking for Communion motets, I recently discovered the various settings of the Tantum Ergo by Victoria listed on CPDL. Two are available on Fr. Abel Marcos' site which I've attached here. We've sung Tantum Ergo III (A major) several times, and it isn't terribly difficult, esp. since it repeats (yay!). Now we're learning Tantum Ergo VI (F major).

    The Amens of both are just to die for.

    Has anyone else done any of these?

    This is a real treasure. Thanks so much! I hadn't heard that melody for the Pange lingua before. It seems to me that some of the individual verses could be used as separate motets.

    Yes, Julie, we just did a section of it for our confirmation recently for Archbishop Aquila. We started at the Tantum Ergo as a finale to benediction.

    That sounds perfectly splendiferous and felicitous. : ) Wish I could have been there! You don't know how homesick I am for Denver and my mountains!

    What was your music program for Confirmation, if I might ask?

    Many thanks again to Cantus67 for sharing his edition of Victoria's Tantum Ergo. It's also available here on cpdl.org. This has become my favorite Eucharistic motet. It's so incredibly moving and filled with such feeling. I've never seen an arrangement of the Tantum Ergo which brought out the significance of the words of the stanzas so well. The slow and meditative opening verse is followed by the jubilant aspect of "laus et jubilatio", etc., and of course the gorgeous "Amen" leaves one absolutely speechless.

    In fact I have to give credit not only to Nancho Alvarez http://www.uma.es/victoria/index.html who has consulted with me on occasion but also to Maestro Harry Christophers of The Sixteen, whose rendition of these pieces are nothing short of stunning. I highly recommend to add this to your library and all of their Palestrina recordings if you can.

    Very grateful for the CD suggestion! It's on its way from Amazon even as we speak. : ) Like all our Victoria CD's, I know it will get plenty of use.
