Good, Versatile Tunes in Breaking Bread 2014
  • I'm working with what we have.

Bottom line is this: We have Worship and Breaking Bread 2014 and the goal is to expand the repertoire of a seminary community into some ... ahem ... "out-of-copyright" hymntunes. What are the some standards --- aside HYDROFOIL and GROSSER GOTT and JESU DULCIS MEMORIA --- found in the Latest Edition of Breaking Bread or Worship?

I'm looking for stuff that has a lot of re-sing value, maybe C.M. and L.M., but are also popular enough tunes to be used in many long-lingering classic hymns. Preferably we'd use some tune that gets used in the Divine Office.

It will be used for entrance. I picked out Homo Quidam for the communion.

Propers come later, and I can do them, but, grace of state, I think we should ease the community in. You'll have to trust me on that.

My pastor wanted me to compare Breaking Bread to another hymnal, so I went through and made a list. It's not comprehensive, but it does contain most of the more known four part hymns and a few others, too. I can't guarantee that all the tunes are in the public domain, but I did remove a lot of them that I noticed were used with permission only. I'm sure I missed some, too, since it wasn't primarily what I was after when doing this. A lot of the hymns use the same tunes.

Anyway, maybe it'll help a bit. I had the list already, so why not?

  • Brilliant! Thank you.

(I meant "public domain" as a euphemism.)
  • Caution: The tunes may be serviceable, but often the words have been adulterated. People who will happily sing Christmas Carols may balk at "God rest you merry, people here, and be no longer sad...."

Breaking Bread actually seemed better than, say, Word & Song in regard to the texts, but I still agree with you. I'd be wary of alterations.

Excellent! You did miss #693, "Be Still, My Soul," to the tune of Finlandia--which actually has good lyrics (written in the 18th century, translated in the 19th), unlike other hymns to the same tune in the same book.

Chris, giving you the benefit of having just given a warning without actually checking, the carol you cite reprinted in BB employs the traditional text "merry, gentlemen, let nothing..."

  • I know one can give lots of criticisms for OCP, but one thing I commend them on (over GIA) is that they do not change the texts of traditional hymns.

I'm not familiar with 'Breaking Bread', so misread the thread's title at a glance, thinking it was a reference to 'Breaking Bad'. That would have been an equally interesting thread. ...

I would have opted for Baking Bread.

Well, it's easier than "Breaking Bed."

Well, if you want to make people mad, just sing one of those traditional hymns with the PC words:
Faith of Our Father, mothers, sisters too...
  • No. 481 UBI CARITAS it is, with Missa Jubilate Deo to boot! Thanks a bunch!
