Marian Hymn Suggestions

    Since the month of May is almost upon us, here are a few Marian hymns which are a bit outside the usual fare.

    1) Mother of God Here I Stand Now Praying (Sir John Tavener)
    We plan to sing this at our May Crowning/Rosary Walk/Marian Concert, and it's instantly available from Sheet Music Plus as an e-copy for $1.57 each.

    2) Tibi novamus (Tobie wznawiamy) I found this charming Marian piece in Polish by the promising young neo-Renaissance composer Pawel Bebenek on YouTube and contacted Pawel by email, whereupon he gave me a Latin version of it. His email address is pawelbebenek@gmail.com. I believe the orchestral arrangement is also available.

    Totally charming, Matthew! Thanks for this. I've just ordered it from Sheet Music Plus. It will go perfectly with our concert theme of Marian music from around the world.

    Ave Maria by Dan Kantor. It's beautiful, and a bit more contemporary in nature. The piano acc. for it is gorgeous.

    In my former parish that was Zdravasbud Maria, and I was told it was a traditional Slovak hymn. (And woe betide me if I didn't program it for the choir every Sunday in May!)

    But I am quite sure you can hear it in the background somewhere in an old movie called Song of Bernadette, and Alfred Newman would have known what he was doing.

    Very cool, G! Thanks so much for the info. It didn't really sound French---I couldn't quite place it, but it's definitely provincial, and you just gotta love that chorus. : )

    I count nine notes in the climacus above which makes an interesting scale. An octave is one thing, but nine notes??

    Thanks for mentioning Perotin. I've been listening to his music this afternoon. It's positively medieval.

    A common figure in music is an ascending or descending 8 note run ending on a ninth note with an underlying harmonic progression as such:
