    Your #2, I I6, breaks the rules, for one thing. And your #3, I iii: there is no Bb in a iii chord in Bb major.

    Would it make a difference if the prize were $500? Not that I'm offering that, yet: but it's only an ordinary day's wage these days.... How about $5,000? I've never made that in a day, speaking personally, but some people do.

    Francis, rules are rather important: Moses whacked a few into stone for us; Jesus gave us a good one; the Holy Fathers send out some from time to time; this forum is full of them. And my paltry few only last through Febuary.

    The winner is: nobody. The melodic fragment 2 - 7 makes a double problem: if the 2 is tuned low (as over a ii6) it can't move to a 7 with a tunable minor third. It has to be harmonized by the dominant. Then the 7, with the perhaps artificial requirement (from 1905) that the chord change, can only be harmonized by a iii chord.

    if only someone would invent some sort of tuning system that would allow for more variety. Not sure how it would be done, but - maybe if we took all the little problems at each point and somehow distributed them across the scale so that their effects were mitigated.

    Never mind, probably no one would ever go for such a thing...

    nah, that would be some weird tuning: we'd have to call it equal tempered or something. No one would like it. It would be on NPR and everything, as 'alternative'.

    You butchered a hog, did you? That's probably better than butchering music. A friend once told me of a German hunting society which put its new members through the following ritual: dressed in white costume from head to toe, including stockings and shoes and gloves, cap, shirt, jacket and trousers, the aspirants had to dress (meaning flay, removed organs, etc.) a deer using knives and other project-appropriate instruments in a certain amount of time WITHOUT getting so much as one tiny splotch of blood anywhere on their clothing. Was your hog butchered similarly!??????? (Many are called... few are chosen.)

    Um, are there rubrics or canons governing the butchering of 'music directors' who aren't musicians???

    MJ, I did butcher a hog, I do butcher music (perhaps), but I'd never butcher a music director. The process was pretty clean, but I had a few splotches at the end. It's amazing, technically, how different a carcass is after eviscerating: it goes from an animal to a piece of meat to be cut up. Pardon, please, from those for whom this is too much ...
