I'm fairly lucky that most places I have been get clued in that when the organ plays quietly it is time to be quiet and only a few minutes away from the start of mass.

Our new pastor has a habit of keeping the lights low before Mass, then flipping them on right before Mass starts. It's really soothing to say a prayer in the low light, but then a rude awakening somehow when the lights turn bright.
