These sparse accompaniments for the Office psalm tones are wonderful. The late Jean Claire had a profound understanding of Gregorian modality. He considered organ accompaniment a "necessary evil" in a monastery and evidently felt that existing formulae for accompany the psalms were inadequate, leading him to create his own.
