Seeking easy to learn SAB motets
  • Can anybody please suggest some easy motets written for SAB? I don't have enough men to split them up, so one voice is plenty. Thanks for your help.

I have a setting of Crux Fidelis which is perfect for the weekend after Labor Day and can be learned in 1-2 rehearsals by an average (or slightly under) choir.

Kevin Allen's Motecta Trium Vocum should not be overlooked either. These are quite simple and very rewarding for a beginning choir. They have an instant appeal to just about everyone.

We began learning these when we started our choir three years ago, and now we have 6 of them in our repertoire. Very good to have on hand when you don't have alot of practice time.

You can purchase the book here and there are free practice videos for each part as well.

I like Baini's Panis Angelicus. We're doing that one in choir right now. Few rests, and all three voices sing at the same time throughout the song, so nobody has to sit and count while others sing, and then miss the entrance. It's also quite beautiful.

Of the motets listed by Charles, my favorites are:

Jesu Rex admirabilis - Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina
Ave Verum Corpus - Josquin des Prez

A motet not on Charles's list but definitely worth doing (scored for SST but it can be taken down a minor third):
    Tua Iesu Dilectio - Palestrina

A nice Ave Maria by Ravenello, edited by our own Jeff Ostrowski

You may also want to look at the Chester Book of Motets, vol. 7: Motets for Three Voices for some other ideas.
