...you text message the priest to see if he wants a cantor for the morning daily Mass and he texts back with a request for De Angelis ordinaries, Salve Regina as an offertory and Tota Pulchra Es for a post communion reflection!
2nd graders are impatient to chant their favorite Sanctus. 6th graders who listen to rap that makes Satan blush understand and respect that the liturgy requires a particular reverence in the music. You can have 6 year-olds in the choir loft who are silent (when not singing) and sit still. Once glance corrects any misbehavior.
The Pastor alludes to the fact that Parishioners should attend a different parish if they want contemporary music, recognizing that we are "heading in another direction."
The Pastor is also pastor of that "different" Parish to which he directs Parishioners that want contemporary music and comments they are working to use said contemporary music in moderation.
Even when requesting contemporary music be incorporated for those that want it at the sunday evening Mass, the Pastor maintains drums are NOT acceptable within liturgy.
I once sang a piece of Gregorian chant in English and improvised the organ part with a bit more contemporary harmony than what you would find in the NOH, and someone came running up to after Mass and asked, 'wow, who composed that piece at the communion! it was beautiful'. I said, well, it is one of the oldest hymns of the church dating back to 300 or so. I was just using the English version today. at that point they looked at me in horror and walked away. I just smirked and looked up and said, "O God, I have just done a very bad thing!"
A pastor who supports a what use to be failing music program and letting it have new life under new leadership! So lucky I have his support as music director. We've gone back to using the pipe organ in the loft and the choir starts singing back in the loft starting in Sept!! Yahoo!!!
...the seminarian at your parish for the summer is asked jokingly Sunday morning if he would like to sing with the schools for a day, says yes, knows the Missa de Angeles by heart, and picks up the SEP introit and offertory and Gregorian communio 15 minutes before Mass, singing them as if he had been practicing them all week.
True story from two days ago...
Sem: Fr. [Pastor], what would you like me to do for the next Mass. Pastor: Oh, I don't know, jumping jacks? Me: Sing in the schola! Pastor: That's a great idea. Sem: Well, I don't have any of the music... Me: No problem. Just go down to the music room and see my assistant.
