I need help with new/old psalm translations!!

    Hi Everyone,

    I'm slightly confused on the new psalm translations and need some help. I recently purchased a copy of the choral edition of the new Worship IV hymnal. I'm very eager to get this hymnal into by parish in 2015. I was looking at the psalm section last night, there are various old Haugen and Haas psalm settings from the old GIA Celebration Series. I was shocked to find that the verses in new Worship IV for those older Haas and Haugen psalm did not get the new translations with the Gelineau/Guimont/various new composers in the Worship IV. I thought all the psalms were to fit the new translation, why did that Haas and Haugen not follow that format?? Even though they were not translated with new text, why would they be consider for the new Worship IV that is set with the new Roman Missal changes. Is it still okay to use them even though they haven't been re-translated??

    There are a couple of factors involved.

    The Responsorial Psalm texts are printed in the Lectionary, not in the main Roman Missal book, so they are not affected by the transition to the Roman Missal Third Edition. No change for them is required. Similarly, there has been no change to Scripture readings.

    Even when the new Lectionary eventually comes with the RGP, it will still be permitted to sing (but not recite) older approved psalm settings. The GIRM doesn't insist on using the latest version for sung psalms.

    The Revised Grail Psalter (used in W4) is approved for use in the U.S., even before it gets printed in the next Lectionary edition.

    The psalms can also be used at other times in the Mass, such as during the Entrance Processsion, at the Preparation of the Gifts, and as a Communion song. No official translation is required in these cases.

    What about the new "lyrical psalter" from GIA? I thought that project took many of the old metrical psalm paraphrases and reworked them to conform them to the revised Grail? I've seen a few samples but I don't own the collection. Is that not the case? And if it is, why weren't those revised psalms included in Gather/Worship, or was it just a timing issue?
