If anyone wants to share what their diocese did/will do for Ordination Masses this spring, I always love to see what other dioceses use. I will post mine when I find the worship aid that I brought home...

By the way, this morning, one of the new priests celebrated his Mass of Thanksgiving in Latin (OF), with fellow forum member Aristotle Esguerra chanting the gregorian propers for the votive Mass of the Holy Spirit. The Mass was mostly sung as well, including dialogs in latin, 2/3 readings and Fr. Zuhlsdorf was preaching. Fantastic.

    In the Madison ceremony:
Litany: Chanted in Latin by a cantor (with bishop chanting bless/bless+sanctify/bless+sanctify+consecrate these chosen men)

It is not clear from this description whether the bishop sang in English or not. If he did, why?

Regardless, I'm not sure this is a good practice, for these reasons:
    1. The litany is as much (if not more so) being prayed for the bishop as it is for the ordinands.
    2. Having the bishop pray "bless/sanctify/consecrate" at this moment anticipates, and may diminish the importance of, the prayer of consecration.
    3. It may send the message that a "lowly" cantor should not be singing such important words as "bless, consecrate."

Fr Krisman, he sang those 3 lines of the litany in latin.

I am not sure of the exact roots of the practice, but knowing him, I suspect it is an aspect of continuity, and it was found in the previous rites. I'm not really sure though, so I'll try and ask him when I see him soon.

    (IV) Sacerdotes Dei, benedicite
    (V) Scio cui credidi

    Gradual:

    (II) Iuravit Dominus
    (III) Protector noster aspice

    Alleluia:
    (I) Confitemini... et invocate
    (II) Ego sum pastor bonus
(III) Ego vos elegi de mundo
    (IV) Iuravit Dominus
    (V) Tu es sacerdos

    Offertory:
    Sicut in holocausto arietum

    Communion:
    (I) Ego vos elegi de mundo

Also, I don't have a copy of the new edition of the English pontificale, but I know they used it Friday, maybe it's an option in there, since a new edition came out fairly recently. Maybe one of you office of worship types can fill me in?

Well, those lists in the Graduale appear under a Latin title about "conferring Holy Orders", and that's all it says. There may be specifics in other books that say other things.

Litany: Chanted in Latin by a cantor (with bishop chanting bless/bless+sanctify/bless+sanctify+consecrate these chosen men)

This is the practice in the 1962 Ordinal:

For the litany see Litany of the Saints (and for the music see the music supplement).

After the invocation "That you grant eternal rest to all the faithful departed" the bishop stands and turns to the ordinands (who remain prostrate on the floor). Holding the crozier in his left hand and still wearing the mitre, the bishop chants or recites the following:

That you bless + these elect. R. We beg you to hear us.
That you bless + and sanctify these elect. R. We beg you to hear us.
That you bless + and sanctify and consecrate these elect. R. We beg you to hear us.

Then the bishop kneels again at the faldstool, and the chanters finish the litany up to "Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord have mercy," inclusive.

    Dr. De Vos,

It was discussed on a previous thread, but let me offer again my compliments on the outstanding music at the Episcopal Ordination. As a self-diagnosed "liturgy nerd," I watch a lot of these Masses when they are posted on CatholicTV, and this was one of the best I've seen. One of the few (possibly the only one) I've seen use all of the Gregorian propers. Kudos on putting together a great program, and with only 22 days notice!

Here's what I had to endure (I was simply in the pews for this one):

    May 18, 2013
    Diocese of St. Petersburg

Musical forces: SATB choir, Vietnamese mixed choir, organ, piano, brass quartet, flute, bass guitar (w/ Vietnamese choir pieces only)
Prelude: Vietnamese choir selection translated as "Overflowing Grace"
Entrance: "Go Up to the Altar of God" (Chepponis)
Sprinkling Rite: "Springs of Water Bless the Lord" (Trapp's adapt. of "Blessed Assurance")
    Gloria: "Melodic Gloria"
    Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 27 (Wilcox)
    Alleluia: "Festival Alleluia" (Chepponis)
Litany of the Saints: Becker's revised setting
Laying on of Hands: "Veni Creator Spiritus" - alternating chant and polyphony (whose setting I have no idea)
Kiss of Peace: "Heart of a Shepherd" (Cooney)
Offertory: a second Vietnamese piece translated as "A Sacrificial Love"
Sanctus, Mysterium, Amen, Agnus: Mass of Wisdom (Janco)
The Lord's Prayer: Warner's setting (I almost ran out of the church when I saw that)
Communion: Vietnamese choir: "The Hymn of Priesthood"
Communion: "Come and Share the Feast of the Lamb" (Trapp)
    Recessional: "Laudate, laudate Dominum" (Walker)

Goes to show that while many places have taken to the RotR, many others have not.

Incidentally, our bishop (who has been here forever) was one of the 5 (out of the 200+ US bishops present for that vote) who voted against the new translation of the Missal and isn't afraid to tell you. That's all I'll say -- you can probably figure out for yourselves how the liturgy in general is treated in this diocese.

My public apology to my friend Richard Chonak for my misunderstanding of whose words he defended, mea culpa.
  • That is the current pontifical. Mine was preordered from the moment it was announced, and when it finally came, the smell if ink was nauseating! I hate that's it's so expensive, and no study edition is available. Not everything in it has been fully updated yet, so it is a bit transitional.

  • I wouldn't waste money buying a new pontifical at this point. As Marc says, the current one is "transitional." In other words, it's exactly the same as the old one except where the texts of the MR 3 have changed.

I'd wait for the actual next edition before coughing up that kind of money, if you need one at all.

Folks, sorry to miss out on all the fun in SLC, but here is the menu for ordinations in Birmingham last Saturday. We pretty shamelessly picked the easier of the chants available (now I see we copied Rudy de Vos's unintentionally!) and recycled a lot of music from this past choral season (the choir and I are "newlyweds", so to speak, as of January). It is now on the EWTN youtube channel, too, although before throwing stones, I hope you know that they mic'ed the choir from around 6 feet away... St. Paul is a fantastic room, though you wouldn't know it from the recording. Also, this choir sang more or less no chant (and none from 4 line notation) before January, so I was particularly proud that they've made the progress they have in a short time. We don't have scholas set up yet, therefore the choir is singing the introit and communio weekly during choir season. This liturgy gave me a new admiration for duration in choirs: everyone was pretty worn out by the beginning of communion, which you hear in the Palestrina. Sadly (for the diocese, but perhaps happily for us) we don't have ordinations for a couple years now, so we have plenty of practice time...

Thanks for the kind words cmb.

BruceL, great that you were doing the latin propers! I just thought that Sacerdotes Dei really works well for Presbyteral Ordinations. The communion chants I chose corresponded to the Gospel reading. (Hence why we had two different communion chants for the presbyteral ordinations and for the bishop's ordination).

They have one, but it's an ancient electronic organ. Wouldn't have surprised me if it had died. I wasn't really in the loop this time around, so not completely sure. The last couple Masses there they've used piano.

and all these years later, the question remains.

Understanding that many Ordinations would have historically used propers of the Saints, votives, etc. It is easy to see why the Propers as listed by the Pontifical and 2002 MR are not being used...they do not exist in regularly attainable Latin settings. When one finds them, it is discovered that they are in fact simplex style Office Antiphons!

The Graduale options still remain the best options, as we continue to await the revised Pontifical.
