Director of Liturgical Music / Cathedral Parish Music Director
The Archdiocese of Miami has an immediate opening for a full-time Archdiocesan Director of Liturgical Music / Cathedral Parish Music Director. The successful candidate will have two major areas of responsibilities and accountabilities.
As Archdiocesan Director of Liturgical Music the individual will report to the Director of Office of Worship and Spiritual Life. This office is of service to the Archbishop who is the chief priest and liturgist of the local Church, in all matters related to Divine Worship. This position assists the Director of the Office of Worship and Spiritual life by overseeing the preparation and direction of liturgical music for all Archdiocesan liturgies that involve the Archbishop, whether celebrated at the Cathedral or elsewhere.
As Cathedral Parish Music Director the individual will report to the Rector of the Cathedral of Saint Mary. This person will develop prayerful liturgical celebrations by the preparation and evaluation of and prayer of these assemblies by the use of sacred music, to help to increase regular sacred music to build and sustain congregational song at Cathedral liturgies, including Mass celebrated for the school children, to deepen the liturgical understanding attendance at these liturgies through the quality of music, to expand volunteer choir membership, both children and adult, and to recruit, train, and sustain regular cantors for weekend and pontifical liturgies.
Qualifications:
Preferred: Masters Degree in Music; Bachelor’s Degree in Music or equivalent, required; previous employment as Director of Music Ministry required.
Must be a Roman Catholic in good standing with considerable knowledge and familiarity of the Roman Catholic liturgy and an ability to integrate the liturgy with musical skills so that the liturgical music component of worship can be celebrated. Possess performance proficiency in a keyboard instrument used in liturgical celebration and voice/choral performance experience. Knowledge of keyboard technique, liturgical service-playing techniques, group vocal techniques and experience in choral conducting. Ability to write simple musical scores, (auxiliary instrumental parts, descants, etc.); understanding of score reading and transposition of instruments. Familiarity with the vast repertoire of sacred music available today, both contemporary and treasured. Sensitivity to the ethnic composition of the parish and its musical needs, including experience developing children’s choir. Excellent inter-personal skills with capacity to interact with priests, professional and volunteer musicians, parishioners, and parish staff. Excellent oral and written English-language communication skills, including clear speaking voice; Spanish required; French a plus. Proficiency in MS Outlook, Word, and Excel, PowerPoint a plus. Good time management, including ability to manage several projects at the same time. Must have a professional demeanor.
