OF Funeral during Octave of Christmas
  • Christ is Born! Glorify Him!

Hi all, I was asked to help with music last minute for a funeral tomorrow (December 27). Since it's the octave of Christmas, I'm not sure how readings and propers are chosen. Specifically it would be helpful to know what to do for the Responsorial Psalm and the verse at the Alleluia. Also is there a Gloria (being that it's the octave of Christmas)?

    Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I think the "Order of Christian Funerals," is the controlling document for funerals. I use the section in the hymnal or missalette for the funeral liturgy. It lists psalm 23 as preferred and psalm 27 as an alternate. The Gospel Acclamation verse is included, "I am the resurrection and the life, says the Lord:/ whoever believes in me will not die for ever." I have never used a Gloria at a funeral. Do talk to the responsible priest.
  • The funeral Mass and its rubrics are permitted, despite the Octave. The Gloria is not sung. The responsorial psalms, with music, and the alleluia verses, are available at Corpus Christi Watershed:
