Marier Exhibit
  • Dr. Theodore N. Marier (1912-2001) was president of the CMAA from 1966 to 1970. The Burns Library at Boston College, his alma mater, opened an exhibit today entitled "Keep Singing: The Musical Legacy of Theodore Marier."

  • Hi Chris,

I'm wondering if you've been to the BC exhibit. Are there any unexpected finds?

Forum readers might also be interested to know that Marier did his graduate work at Harvard and while there worked closely with Archibald Davison.
  • Hi Randolph.

I'm co-curator of the exhibit, with my wife, Barbara Adams Hebard, who is conservator at the Burns Library.

Kudos to Rosalind Mohnsen, music director at Immaculate Conception, Malden Mass., for alerting us to the approaching Marier centenary.

The novelties are the articles that appeared in the Boston College Heights, starting while he was an undergraduate. You can save yourself the trip and search at:

    My favorites:

Nov. 29, 1933 advertisement for the Boston College-Holy Cross Victory Dance, featuring Ted Marier and His Glen Royale.

Mar. 7, 1941 "Marier Talks on Gregorian Chant"

And this one didn't make it:

Apr. 21, 1950 "Offer Requiem at Liturgical Day" including this nugget: "All . . are urged to take part in the pantomimes which are used in the dramatization method of instruction."

The best overview of Marier's career that I've seen remains the essay by Fr. Robert Skeris in Sacred Music:

  • Thanks Chris for the links.

For those who don't know Chris Hebard, he's an alumnus of the Boston Archdiocesan Choir School and a good source of information about Marier and his teaching and conducting methods.
  • Looks like a wonderful exhibition, I hope to see it soon.
Meanwhile please see the below events scheduled for October 17th (Dr. Marier's 100th Birthday) at St. Paul's in Harvard Square Cambridge, where Dr. Marier was Director of Music. The first of several planned re-releases of his recorded legacy will be on offer at the reception. Scott Turkington will speak at 7.30, following a 6.00 Mass and 7.00 reception.

  • I cut my liturgical teeth using Hymns, Psalms and Spiritual Canticles. Using that hymnal formed my sensibilities in ways I could never have found on my own. It went out of print the month after I received my first copy. I bless and thank Dr. Marier almost every day. Deo Gratias.
