Chair - Department of Music
The University of St. Thomas, a private Catholic university committed to the liberal arts and to the religious and intellectual tradition of Catholic higher education, is seeking an outstanding leader for the position of Chair, The Department of Music, with rank up to Professor. The Chair of Music reports directly to the Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, and works collaboratively with the campus Chaplain on liturgical matters. He or she is responsible for the oversight of current music programs, the development of new ones in collaboration with faculty, and overseeing music for Sunday Mass in the Chapel of St. Basil. Because of this key role in the Catholic worship of the UST community, first preference will be given to candidates who are believing and practicing members of the Catholic Church as well as expert music professionals.

The successful candidate will be thoroughly conversant with the Catholic liturgical tradition (including a familiarity with Catholic documents on the liturgy), have a mastery of sacred choral music and choral conducting, experience in preparing and conducting a church or chapel choir, and be able to teach the typical range of music courses required for an undergraduate music major. Excellent keyboard skills are desirable. Candidates should have the Ph.D. in musicology or the D.M.A.

Although the Music Department has an expertise in vocal music, the Chair of the Music department will also be responsible for developing an instrumental program. Candidates should be capable of integrating the discipline of music with the Catholic Intellectual Tradition or willing to obtain this ability.

The successful candidate will also have a profound understanding of and enthusiasm for the University’s Mission in relation to the music program. He or she will also have a key leadership role in programming for a proposed new Performing Arts and Conference Center on the University’s campus.

The position requires that candidates must hold an earned doctorate from an accredited university, a scholarly and/or performance record enabling appointment to the rank of Associate Professor in the School of Arts and Sciences. The candidate must demonstrate leadership and administrative experience in higher education or the performing arts.
